The event window is the only time to receive them, but others took advantage of those events and you could get the event pokemon from them perhaps. High IVs(and proper nature) on newly hatched popular pokemon(deino from b/w) seem to have more trade value than random rare. I picked up a bunch of the b/w dragons from people just by trading multiple starters. I wouldn't worry too much just about rares, figure out what you like and work from there.

But I don't think you'll have official legitimate means of getting them through not-trade. There are definitely illegitimate means f you want to use those.

I think I found a solution to this problem, one Nintendo apparently saw fit to include for this very reason.

I would presume that one or more Shiny Pokemon, with good IVs and TM moves, would be an attractive trade offering.

Statistically you still need to breed about 2.5k of the same pokemon....that would take an extremely long time.

Aren't Pokemon IV and natures are randomized and chosen upon hatching? I seem to remember it being like that in Crystal.

If so you can save like 3 steps before hatching and cut down the time to do so.

There was a step counter in diamond/pearl. That helped a lot.

But yeah, IVs are really time consuming to get right.

Finished the main quest arc of Pokemon Coliseum - it's a remarkable FF VII knockoff, same protagonists/locations/events. The game felt clumsy and rushed in places, particularly the last parts. The music and scenery are much more influenced by Japanese gestalts than the main series games.

The game is interesting for its very conventional social/sexual roles - it is one of a very few Pokemon games with only a male protagonist; the female protagonist does nothing but literally follow you the player around the entire game. This is often obnoxious since she has collision and there are a lot of narrow corridors. The main antagonists include: a ghetto rapper (definitely one of the funniest villains ever I'd say); a Sephiroth knockoff with a male hourglass figure; a female ghetto idol; an ambiguously lesbian couple; and a Dr. Robotnik clone. Most of the supernumerary characters fit surprisingly conventional roles (flirting with the protagonist etc).

It's important to note that Japanese people consider silliness an antiheroic quality - they make the antagonists buffoons for good reason.

I guess it just seems weird after every game lately is filled with supergirls and PC characters. The game is interesting, at any rate; it's pathetic how even a FFVII knockoff suddenly seems super-original and interesting compared to the bland sewage that passes for gaming these days.

So, with Coliseum cleared, now working my way through Emerald while semi-afking IoC to level my freshly bought druid; I intend to buy full druid S1 for sexy bodysuit transmog.

Emerald is still as fun as it was a decade ago. Again, I think that's just a sad and pathetic commentary on how bad video games are these days. Things that stand out are:

-absence of bugs and glaring spelling/syntax errors
-colorful scenery
-relatively witty dialogue
-absence of bugs and glaring spelling/syntax errors
-natural game flow
-incredibly well-tuned difficulty-wise
-absence of bugs and glaring spelling/syntax errors
-intuitive and responsive controls
-interesting economic choices

Interesting quote from Emerald NPC

Quote:
It's embarrassing if you lose more often than you win...

Yeah GL seeing that in a modern "competitive" game...

So, I am working my way through the game in typical Aestu fashion. The first thing I did, of course, was recruit all three starter Pokemon and xfer them to Coliseum. I plan on playing through the games sequentially, xferring my Pokemon forward then selling each cartridge back to eBay after I'm done.

Oh, and question. Can Black City interface with Black City, or is it limited to Black City to White Forest? It looks like most of y'all got Black version - so, should I get White version?

I'll be getting white version. I have a habit of making up my mind on a version without looking into it beforehand.

Just use what seems like fun, especially if you're just trying to beat the game for now. Focus on a good team when you're ready to do some online matches.

How far are you into the game? Are you doing levelling or endgame?

You really can't go wrong with:
1. Any starter Pokemon (or more than one)
2. Anything that evolves twice
3. Anything that's dragon or steel (as long as it doesn't have a 4x vulnerability to fire or frost)

Well I played through a few gyms and decided to start over. Right now I've only been raising oshawatt and I just beat the second gym. Catching everything as I go and deciding later.

I want that bug fire pokemon.

I bet they're not half as bad as they are in Guild Wars.

To best progress through the game, you need a well-balanced team. Ideally, you want six good, strong, well-balanced Pokemon of roughly the same levels - it's not as effective to try to rely on only one stronger Pokemon. This will become more apparent past the sixth Gym or so.

Your eventual ultimate team will be hatched from eggs, picked from amongst many eggs by specifically chosen parents, after you beat the game. Don't worry about that now.

It's unlikely that any of the Pokemon you catch will be even good as parents for your final team. They're just there to fill your Pokedex and for your levelling team. The best endgame Pokemon have sharp levelling curves and thus don't make good early game Pokemon (e.g., Larvitar/Trapinch/Horsea versus most bug-types and Pokemon that don't evolve)

So my advice is to take it easy. I honestly find that going back to classic gaming, it's often a bit strange to unlearn the min-maxxing/power-levelling habits learned in shitty modern games and just enjoy the ride.

I would advise you to consider trading Pokemon with others ASAP, because Pokemon from other players gain levels more quickly than those you catch or hatch yourself, and other players can provide you with strong, freshly hatched Pokemon from other regions (e.g., complement Caterpie/Weedle with Wurple, pick up a Pichu, or get a Houndour/Eevee/Ninetales instead of the Rattata/Poochyena you'd otherwise use), which lets you establish a more diverse team and spend less time grinding levels to challenge gyms.

Most players are going to have some level 5 baby Pokemon sitting around in their PC, left over from breeding efforts. Better than what you'll capture while levelling, may have good TM moves, and will gain levels faster.

That, and I'd like to hear your feedback on the Wifi thing.
