http://grist.org/list/north-carolina-tr ... evel-rise/

Quote:
North Carolina is no stranger to the “if you dislike it then you should have made a law against it” model of legislation, but this is extreme: The state General Assembly’s Replacement House Bill 819 would rule that scientists are not allowed to accurately predict sea-level rise. By all legal calculations, the sea level will now rise eight inches by the end of the century.

Why are there no sponsors listed?

The sponsors are oil companies. Canada recently passed a similar law for the same reason.

Wish it was illegal to present a bill without an actual person's name on it.

Someone should have to take credit for this shit.

FACT: Corporations can sponsor individuals for top secret security clearance, but individuals cannot sponsor other individuals.

Corporations are people too!

Funny enough, if you sit down and read the Battle.Net EULA, what it actually says is, only "natural individuals" (read: people) can commit to the contract, so corps can't have Bnet accounts. In practice, this is probably unenforceable for the same reason that corporations are legally people.

Good news, everyone!

Scientists are still allowed to inaccurately predict the rise of sea levels!

And using a quick sniff of my smelloscope, I predict we'll all need to take these pills that counteract the immense pressure of being deep underwater.

More good news! It's a suppository!

I doubt Galileo would have been persecuted if he was wrong.

I think this is misleading. Companies (most of which are organized as corporations of some type even if there is a single owner) sponsor individuals, who are in most cases employees, because the jobs they do require that the employee has a clearance to perform the services the company has been contracted to provide. There is most likely some individual in any company making those decisions to sponsor who has final approval over whether or not someone is sponsored. I think it is set up this way because an "individual" doesn't have a legitimate interest in asking that someone receives a security clearance, but a company providing services to the government would have a legitimate interest in doing so.

I doubt the clergy involved with accusing him of and trying him for heresy thought he was right.

No, it's set up like that because there are no legitimate interests there at all.

The secrecy crap has wasted trillions of dollars (as in, assuming black-budgeting has been 5% of the defense budget for the last 50 years, that is enough to alone and without any other cuts cover the entire national debt - in reality, it's probably many times that), it has turned potential allies into hardened enemies (basically all of South America and Africa plus Iran), murdered American citizens (MKULTRA, the JFK assassination, LSD testing), and has left a legacy of malfeasance and abject, pathetic failure from Vietnam to Cuba to Lebanon to East Germany to Afghanistan to China.

It's not only setting an unimaginably vast pile of money on fire, it's choking on the smoke while doing so.

In that period of American history you like to idealize, we got by without top secret clearance etc, and managed to successfully wage wars on both offense and defense without it. And the argument that "things have changed" isn't valid, because since the time of Pericles (part of his famous speech was "lol intelligence agencies") secret services have been more trouble to their own people than to national enemies.

They feared him because at some level they knew he was and - as with you and other like-minded people - they didn't want their self-interested world view disrupted by inconvenient facts. Better to stick with willful ignorance.

Historical proof? As Galileo walked away from the tribunal, he was heard to say, "Nonetheless, it [the Earth] does move."

Maybe. Cold war novels are still fun as hell to read. Small consolation I know.

You should read "The Pentagon Papers" or "By Way of Deception".

So you're saying, instead of saying the sea level rising by 3 inches a year, they can say it's decreasing by 3 inches a year then apply the opposite day law! That's pretty inaccurate! Clear bastards.
