I read the troll but didn't think it was very funny. Disposable jobs like these will always be around. If I had gotten a good gig then that troll would've been clever and appreciated.

Personally, I think this manifest destiny bullshit where free market capitalism is concerned is the most harmful concept in history.

Mass producing goods, using shady business practices like child labor, using raw materials gained from processes like fracking, transporting the goods recklessly to be sold and whatever doesn't sell is marked down, whatever is damaged is just thrown out.

These are serious problems. We live comfortable lives at the expense of others, and that's really what it boils down to.

My buddy came to stay with me for a couple months here in Chicago...and wanted to get a job. He has an Anthropology degree, and had held a few jobs, but nothing too major. One week of pounding the pavement in Chicago and he had 3 job offers to be a server (and making some decent money doing it).

Decent money meaning above poverty / enough to make capital progress?

Above poverty, yes. What;s your definition of "capital progress"?

If the guy with an anthro degree is serving tables, what about the people who don't have anthro degrees (and probably aren't as good looking)?

In my opinion, him having an anthro degree is irrelevant and didn't do anything to get him the job. For a job at my business, a bachelor's is a must to get your foot in the door. But, if you're going to be waiting tables...might as well skip college altogether and save the cash. And if you get an undergrad degree in anthropology (without plans for grad school), you're more than likely to have waiting tables be your only option....so again, save your money.

In terms of good looking...my buddy isn't exactly Don Juan. I think what helped him is the fact that I edited his resume, which looked pretty terrible before I got to it. He's also relatively personable. The biggest thing that helped him was also persistence. He went into so many places...just walking up and down the streets of Chicago handing out resumes. I think more people would do well to have that kind of conviction to getting a job.

Point taken. I was merely attacking the subset of people who have claimed there are NO JOBS, as I said.

Spot on. America is a society and economy built on consumption. Our consumption controls much of the rest of the world's economies. A scary thing.

What's even scarier is trying to figure out how to fix it.

Progress towards owning a house or some other small capital (such as a degree, business, or supporting a family.

You yourself could not do that on $8/hr - you yourself said you had to go deeply into debt just to keep going (then got employed in a nonproductive field that exists only as a political anomaly)

That waiting tables is competitive is proof that the system is broken. Menial jobs should be all but guaranteed. If menial work is competitive then that proves that there are far more workers than jobs and in fact, there are not even remotely enough jobs for everyone.

Compete with others to slave away so you can live like a pauper for your entire life?
What does that say about the system?
"Hard work pays off". For who?

I believe you were inviting the idea of a jack in lieu of the drug test in the thread about a page and a half ago.

Grats Xeoni.

Azelma, you're the king of backing down.

My bad. I meant two pages ago. Such as I meant.

I clarify a comment because clearly it doesn't invalidate the whole OWS movement and get criticized. I guess you want me to be more Rush Limbaugh / Bill O'Reilly like.

Hilarious.

Pretty sure Rush Limbaugh has a long and distinguished history of backing down.
