Was this your first use? If so, it's possible that your brain hadn't yet fully activated its cannabinoid receptors; this is the case with those who don't get high their first time, which happens to be the majority of the population, myself included. Try to perfect your technique --- if you're using a bowl as I suspect, take puffs instead of long draws and thumb the carb on and off until you've fully inhaled (after drawing the initial hit, that is).
If you're looking for purely therapeutic (i.e. pain-relieving) effects, then edibles are your best bet, as they provide the full load of both THC and CBD, the latter being the "body high" component while the former is responsible for the "head high." I must, however, point out that edibles, due to their potency, increase the rate at which tolerance is acquired. So be mindful of that if you end up ingesting them regularly.
As others have said, vaporization is excellent for avoiding lung damage. If you're planning on looking into vapes, I can't recommend
the Magic Flight Launch Box enough. It's potent, it's portable, it's inconspicuous and the manufacturer is one of the most reliable companies I've ever dealt with. To put it into perspective, if you break your vape, they'll
send you another one. For free. And it's a lifetime warranty. Best. Purchase. Ever.
All things considered, though, just be mindful of your smoking habits. Be sure that the bud is broken up well enough --- a grinder is excellent for this, if not essential --- and that you're taking large (and clear) enough hits.
Also, a pro-tip: eat a mango before smoking/vaping/edible-ing if you want to accentuate the buzz. I'm not sure when it comes to the exact science, but mangoes apparently make your body temporarily more sensitive to a lot of chemicals, THC being one of them. It's nothing too extreme, of course, but it's certainly a bit of extra fun added to an already pleasant experience.
So enjoy, and good luck with the next sesh.
EDIT: Son of a bitch. Didn't even notice that Xeoni had mentioned the MFLB prior to my posting. Oh well.
