I've never played a Civ game before but I'm thinking about picking these titles up. I was reading about them and everyone keeps screaming in reviews and comments that Civ 4 is better since Civ 5 lacked religion and some other features... but, the expansion adds that content, so am I right in assuming Civ 5 + Expansion is the right way to go?

Civ3 was the best of the series. By far.
And it didn't have religion.

Get Civ3 Complete. But it is very slow-paced and cerebral. This may or more likely is not for you.

They're fine games. I wasted more time in age of empires 2 though

Civ 3 is the best, Civ 5 G+K is also great. It's a bit of a resource hog though.

I personally hate Civ 4, though I can recognize the game is mostly fine.

If destruction exists, we must destroy everything.
