Yet another Fant-Has-a-Question thread! Yay!

Which non-iPad tablet computer should I get? I was at my friends place yesterday, and I was using his iPad to look up bulbapedia while playing pokemon. It was awesome to have the internet in my hand. I really want a tablet now, for both the internetz and e-reader capability. The iPad is too expensive for no reason. So, which of the other (3?) tablets is best for those two things? Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, Nook?

I know it's the same as looking on google for reviews, I was just looking for additional input. Thanks!

Get an iPad. There is nothing else that can really compete.


Though if you're insisting on being frugal, I'd go Kindle Fire.

NY Times suggests that the Kindle Fire is the bad pick for those who can't focus while reading a book. That would include me if I hadn't already deleted social networking giants.

I don't have trouble focusing on reading, so that shouldn't be an issue. I was mainly asking for personal reviews/anecdotes/tech-y talk about the myriad devices on the market at the moment. I hear Nexus 7 is a better version of the kindle fire in all area, but idk who to believe lol

EDIT: another concern is the availability of books on a certain device. Are they all the same in this regard or is one superior to another?

Can vouch for the Kindle. It works well for books, Pandora, and Facebook/browsing the web and such. I'm positive that its app store pushes for the same quota of worthless shit that any other device would provide.

Have a Nook color. I haven't actually done comparisons, but I love it.

I went to best buy today, and found the samsung galaxy tab 2. Looks legit. I'm now deciding between that and the nexus 7. Any of you techies have advice?

I have an Asus Transformer. I love it. I like that I can go between using it like a netbook/laptop and using it like a tablet. The tablet has a microSD slot and a miniHDMI slot. It has a detachable keyboard dock which extends it's battery life. The dock adds an SD slot and 2 USB ports (allowing you to hook up a mouse or an external HD). It is also incredibly inexpensive.

I also have a Kindle Keyboard (which I love for reading!) I love my gadgets

Did a bit more research, and it's a solid tie between the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Google Nexus 7. The Nexus seems to beat the tab in most areas, but lacks expandable storage (would I even need that on the 16GB version?). My new concern is the lack of purchasable books, movies, etc on these tablets over the Kindle's market. What do you guys think? Can I use amazon's market on these devices?

I think you can also root a Nook color and use it for both games and books. I have a variety of android devices in different sizes and have found that I vastly prefer the Kindle (reader not Fire) because it is just like reading a book because of the E-ink tech. My battery can last for months and it is tiny. I don't like reading on my tablet or my Galaxy Nexus because of the backlit screen.

As far as appstores are concerned, go to Amazon and download their app. You get a free app every day. If you have an android you can download FoxFi to turn your phone into a mobile hot spot for your tablet. I think there is a deal on the Nexus 7 right now.... check Slickdeals. I think it is a $25 credit or something.

I have an iPhone because I never had an iPod and now I have a phone and pod in one! But iPad is silly. I will be getting either the Galaxy Tab 2 or the Nexus 7, just not sure which. I don't mind reading on the backlit screen, and a tablet seems convenient. I dislike having to take my laptop into the bathroom when I has to poop in order to read FUBU or watch the news/pokemon.

Can I turn my iPhone into a hotspot? Also, do I get a free app every day on a non-amazon tablet?
