Does anyone have one of those charts/threads for dumbasses that explains how to setup everything, pros/cons, etc.?

The thing is, I don't know shit about anything.

Which is why I've been put off for so long.

Ubuntu or Mint. Then you can decide if you want KDE, Xfce, Gnome, or keep Unity window manager (Ubuntu). You don't really need to configure anything.

Step 01: Install Ubuntu
Step 02: $sudo apt-get install gnome-shell;

and that's it
unless you're a nerd, then:
Step 03: $sudo apt-get install build-essentials;

Everything keeps saying I need a Windows install CD. Is it absolutely required for the process?

If you already have Windows installed on the computer you're going to dual boot on, then having the Windows CD would only be necessary in the event of you making a kerfuffle.

I consider my 250gb hard drive pretty small and made a huge mistake only giving 40 or so of those gigs to my Windows partition. Best of luck with your sorting.

So, does this mean that you've now officially joined the World of Terminalcraft?
