One of the biggest things with Linux is knowing how to track down what information you need to fix something, make sure to always put the version you are using in the search string on google to try to help weed out crap from like 5 release ago when everything was completely different. 9 out of 10 times you will wind up at the forums for whichever distro you use, by far Ubuntu has probably the best forums for support. If you don't mind investing a little money pick up a copy of Linux for Dummies as it will explain a lot of things and give you a good overall understanding of how things work especially if you are new to the distro. If you are into IRC freenode has a few help channels I believe, you should be able to get assistance there as well.

Maybe I should try Linux out. How idiot friendly is the install? Can I get it working with no real idea what I am doing?

Ubuntu is idiot proof to install and should have drivers packaged for most things.
