I am not in good enough physical shape to do that kind of work, I think.

Do you have any experience tutoring?

4-5 hours per day depending on the shift. If you can survive the first month you can do it all. There is more technique than brute strength, but obviously you still need to be able to lift things. Max is 70 pounds down the belt and 150 on the floor. If you go into it thinking about being paid to work out it isn't so bad. I lost ~20 pounds and gained a fair bit of muscle.

Here in Minneapolis, this is essentially one of 2 or 3 main hubs where everything gets sorted to the smaller centers. I have no idea how the small ones work but I've been told there is very few people. My building has something like 550 part time employees and 450 full time.

I don't get how joining the military would help at all. Then again, I'm not too familiar with incentives to sign up in the first place. You'd say "military service" and I'd think "nop" instantly.

There is no way I could lift remotely near that much. And since as you say there are very few people there is no way I could overcome competitive forces. Why hire me?

No. As with the UPS, though, I don't see how I'd overcome the competitive forces. Why hire me?

They burn through people like you wouldn't believe here. First "interview" was basically everyone who was interested watched some powerpoint and the guy talked about some basics then a tour of the building. After he asked who was still interested and scheduled a real interview. From there they asked me my previous jobs and if they think I could do it. Told them I did some manual labor with hay bails and my pizza shack job I had worked at for almost 6 years already. Then he asked me how long I would stay with UPS. I said at least 16 months since that was how long my school was and was offered the job and when I could start.

At my building, if you say you are capable and won't leave in a month or three you will likely get a job offer. I've seen tons of people quit in the first 5 days because they were sweating or thought a trailer was claustrophobic.

Ah, the phony elitist:
"I'm amazing because I do things so easy that anyone who isn't claustrophobic and retarded can do them."

The fact remains it isn't practical for reasons we've already examined - small staff, and I am not strong and of below average height, so I would not be able to compete.

Doesn't address my situation in any way. Next!

Quitting because you had to do physical work for once in your life or mentally couldn't handle standing in a trailer with boxes coming down a set of rollers means I'm elitist, okay. I was simply stating facts.

I did not say you were an elitist. I said you were a phony elitist.

An elitist is someone who sees themselves as part of a legitimate hegemony of the elite, defining this identity through prowess in chosen pursuits.
A phony elitist is someone who genuinely sees themselves as ordinary at best, but tries to assume the mantle of elitism by bringing the bar down to the level of the ordinary and common, then defining his identity entirely in the double-negative.

According to your facts - the sole qualifications for doing your job is not being mentally retarded, physically deficient or claustrophobic. Then how does the UPS choose between everyone (several hundred thousand people per urban area) who meets those criteria? You take such pride in your job yet claim that all it means is that you are not retarded, puny or claustrophobic. Since those are marginal accomplishments, it stands to reason that your motivation is profound insecurity. Hence, phony elitist.

Anyway, back to the topic...I know that it seems like I am rejecting ideas out of hand, but I just don't see how the ideas yet mentioned would be applicable.

Having the personal qualities for the lowest of low UPS jobs is not cause for elitism. They chose by who walks in the door and finds someone else when another quits while continually repeats the process until someone decent sticks around. That is the answer unless it is obvious you can't do it. UPS has an incredibly high turnover rate.

Yes, it is actually.

Insecure in what? Posting about UPS more than twice isn't cause for elitism or insecurity.

You've essentially said you need money and this is a relatively easy job that offers more than just a paycheck every week.

The tasks are physically demanding beyond my capabilities and there would be no reason for them to choose me over any number of other applicants with more experience and physical inclination.

Why?

You take enormous pride in it yet claim it is easy. Only insecure people pride themselves on that which is easy. That is why they are insecure.

Take the federal loans. I think that's your easiest, best option.

Just remember you'll have to get a job and pay them back - I think you'll be able to do it.

Yes, that is the easiest and best option. I just don't agree with your assumption because the job market is so unsure. The economy is bleeding jobs and like I said, employers are demanding experience for entry-level positions, forcing people down the labor chain and crushing newbs looking to break in.

But more than that, like I said, I've pretty well decided against the US school system because it's so bad. I am going to apply to some AUS/NZ/CAN schools - the problem is my GPA is only 2.7 so that disqualifies me from many.

You could always swing around a brass pole.

Iggy is an accountant and so is my brother's wife. My other sister-in-law is the director of the financial aid office at a local university. So yes. That person exists.

Kiwanis gives out scholarships, as do many other service organizations. Many schools offer fellowships for academic excellence as well. Check with the institution you will be attending.
