Then, as a kinkster: it's really fucking offensive, since the kink and D/s represented isn't at all accurate. Maybe in a physical sense, but the motivations behind it and their psychological relationship is just wrong and misrepresentative of real D/s relationships. From an outsider, it can definitely look and feel like an abusive relationship, but it's probably as far from that as possible - it's built on utmost respect and trust between both participants, even if the power balance is dramatically shifted during play (or beyond, I know a few lifestylers). What Christian does to Anastasia is abusive, and the way she reacts is borderline Stockholm. It's just ugh.
I dunno, I guess the appeal is understandable on some level (rape fantasies are some of the most common erotic fantasies held by women, and I totally buy that D/s holds a larger appeal in the mainstream but most people are too prudish to give it a shot) but it's not a good step for the BDSM/Leather/Kink community in the eyes of the mainstream imo. It trivializes how important a lot of the aspects required to have a meaningful D/s relationship are, and makes tops (especially male tops) look like sadistic, abusive cunts.
I should probably try to read them all the way through though, but they're so... awful.
It's a shame too, the internet (and fanfiction) have spawned some great pieces of erotic literature but shit like this is what ends up getting published and making the authors tons of cash.
