...read these arguments about Romney's tax returns ("He could just clear this up lickity split by releasing the documents." "What's he got to hide?") as using almost verbatim the bullshit birthers said about Obama's birth certificate?

EDIT: Disregard the fact that they're arguing about two different things, but what people are SAYING is the same.

Objectively, questioning a president's birth is way more retarded than asking for tax returns of a potential president. Still, I agreed with the lolbirthers that Obama should have just released it ASAP and made them all look like even bigger retards (if that was even possible). Romney should do the same.

Romney should release his birth certificate because his dad was Mexican.

Which, honestly, I expected to see used as free fodder to sway latino voters. Instead of the complete opposite of that.

I believe that the reason Obama initially didn't release his birth certificate is the same reason he said the US has 57 states. He's using the extreme far right as a shill to manipulate the middle into voting for him, by deliberately giving the birthers and anti-Semites ammo.

He finally made a point of releasing his birth certificate when he knew that discrediting the birthers and demonstrating himself as someone to be "trusted" would do the most damage. And he said that he had visited 57 states - not 51, not 69, not 72, but 57 - for the same reason.

That's not to say I think this is good leadership on Obama's part or actually proves he's "trustworthy".
He's an operator, simple as that.

The corollary, though, is that unlike Romney, Obama doesn't actually have anything to hide on said points (although I do think he has other skeletons in his closet such as drug use and radical connections).

Beginning an op-ed by telling your audience, that has never heard of you, how awesome you are, without citing any actual accomplishments, is great for one's credibility, right?

Then go on for three paragraphs about how bad the object of your polemic's opponent is, trying to draw the implication that the bad guy only seems bad because your bugbear is worse, all without actually citing any facts.

Then cite Fox News as your only concrete source on anything.

Summary, it's two pages of nothing.

Tax evasion is a crime, a breach of the public trust and a betrayal of the country, legally and morally disqualifying anyone seeking office let alone the presidency.

Being an asshat in college, running around with your pants on your head, writing insanely radical opinion pieces and choosing the most inane or controversial courses imaginable and failing most of them is neither strange nor relevant to political office. Better people than Obama have done stupider things in college than anything he could have possibly done.

The GOP didn't see it as a problem that Bush could never have gotten within 1000 rankings of Yale if not for Daddy so it is ridiculously hypocritical to now complain that someone who clearly isn't stupid might have something bad on his academic transcript.

All those are reasons why what this Pravda column says are retarded. But to debunk the argument - the claim that Obama never graduated from Harvard - takes only a moment's thought.

If such were the case, Harvard would simply say so.

This is a case of right-wing nutcases tripping off Pravda because it legitimizes their own bullshit, and to that end they will grasp for any idea no matter how completely absurd.

Your reading comprehension is still AIDS since the 'claim' quoted above wasn't even brought up in this article. I get that you're not thinking clearly, though... still mad that he's suggesting Romney play the same card Obama is playing. See, while Harry Reid and the democrats are accusing Mitt Romney of tax evasion, this guy is accusing our President of lying on applications and receiving aid for foreign students. Is lying on an application for financial aid legal? I doubt it, but I'm not the resident legal expert. Also, he brings up a fair point -- if the President didn't say he was a foreign student on the applications then there's nothing to hide, right? Obama should just release his transcripts and records from Oxy and Columbia. That's what you guys are saying about Romney anyways, right?

Quote:
If it’s okay for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to go on a fishing expedition about Romney’s taxes (even though he knows absolutely nothing about them nor will release his own), then I think I can do the same thing. But as Obama’s Columbia Class of ’83 classmate, at least I have more standing to make educated guesses.

Tax evasion is a crime, a betrayal of the country, and a failure to perform a civic duty. And if you do it when you're rich enough to pay many times your share and not notice the difference you are an asshole plain and simple.

Lying on financial aid forms is usually not a crime, insofar as it is who gives a shit, and anyone who doesn't have unlimited money does it because they'd be a fool not to. The columnist himself points out Obama is not rich. If Obama lied and got money for college all that means is that some poor but clever and ambitious kid fibbed and the money got put to good use anyway. So wtf is the problem?

Eturnalshift is just trying to justify his cowardice and disloyalty to the US that resulted in him going AWOL because he was too chickenshit to do his duty and serve in Egypt after the taxpayers of this country bought him a diploma.

The foreign student crap is lol. Now that the birthers can't plausibly claim Obama wasn't born in this country, now they are trying to ding him for being born in this country. These people are losers.

Obama IS rich now. He just probably wasn't then. Not to split hairs.

It's been a while since I filled one out, but I'd be surprised if student aid forms, like most other government forms, didn't have some "I attest this information to be correct to the best of my knowledge" somewhere around the signature line. Can't really make the "we need to know everything about this guy" argument with Romney's tax forms (and I honestly still do not understand why anyone thinks people should be releasing that kind of personal information, it's probably illegal for an employer to ask for those from prospective employees) and then retract that argument when it comes to President Obama's school records. Lying to receive government funds is at least as bad as being a tax cheat, since you're essentially stealing from the government no matter which one of those things you do. Making the "it's OK because he needed it" argument is a cop-out at best, and a double-standard regardless.

I don't see a problem with asking the guy who might become one of the most powerful people on the planet to show us his tax records. If he's crooked, everyone should know before they vote.

I don't see a problem with either argument. Show us the tax records, show us the college records.

So he shows the returns he filed when he thought someone might actually care.

It was enough for McCain and you never questioned him or his backed taxes... why now? Is Romney a threat?
