Jesus fuck who pays that for an addon?

Expansions confirmed for a game that isn't out. But guys, there's no sub!

For a fraction the amount I spent on the sub all those years. And they came out at reasonably consistent intervals. And for better or worse, all brought a substantial amount of new content to the table that built off the original game. As in, what went into TBC/WotLK/Cata was Blizzard (rightly or wrongly) learning from and developing on the original, not implementing stuff that they deliberately held back to ding customers later on.

Businesses exist to make money, the most money they can make. This is not strange, this is not wrong, this is not unfair. The strength of a sub-based model is that it rationalizes the monetization of the game. As Tuhl alluded, without the fiscal stability of a sub, Anet has a strong incentive to bork expansion frequency and impact depending on the status of the game.

The perversity of B2P is that the better and stronger the initial game, the stronger the incentive to drive the game downhill later on. With a sub, the reverse is true.

I was aiming that comment at Tuhl, since he seemed to be incredulous that someone would pay 50 bucks for an expansion pack. I guess WoW's xpacs were 40?

BC was 30 I think, but true enough the others were 40. Regardless, yes I did. And I played the shit out of BC and WotLK, at the very least.

The point I was making is that years passed between those expansions. When WoW launched, there wasn't any purposely-locked content already in the game that they were gonna make you cough up to play later. Announcing expansions before you've even got a game released is almost as bad as day-one DLC. Releasing an expansion every 6 months and charging $50 for it is just a dishonest way of saying "we have a sub, but make people buy this game by telling them there's no sub." I don't particularly care as I'm already definitely not playing GW2, but you should probably know just what this looks like.

No, I'm well aware and it's something I'm cautiously optimistic on [that they stick to their word]. They've stated so far that the game will get free content patches every month, and major patches a la WoW several times a year, and paid expansions every 18-24 months; the inference w/Cantha is from interviews w/devs saying that both it and Elona will be featured predominantly in expansions, and that the expansions will be in line with industry standards, not separate games the way GW1 handled them. Both would add game spaces/continents comparable in size and scope to Tyria, and if they can maintain the quality of content, I'm (and I believe most players of the game) will be more than willing to fork over 40-50 bucks for it.

I'm more curious to see what the live team has in store for the game, especially since a design element they like to tout is that Dynamic Events can be taken out of the game and replaced with new ones, so content will stay 'fresh'.

But I get the suspicion (bit strong), and who knows, maybe after release and a trial makes it's way out, we'll see you and other unsures in game :)

GW2 is going to die out just like all other games that try to dethrone WoW. Sad but true.

But it's a new, fresh, innovative non-sub game? I..I don't understand?
:(

I HATE that WoW STILL has 10,000,000ish subs and I want GW2 to be amazing and popular and shit all over Actitrash.

So tell me, Zaryi, is this possible? Please no fan-girl rambleramble.

It doesn't. WoW has probably about a million or less Western subs.

Out of that 10m, half are C-WoW, which are worthless because C-WoW has no sub and is run through a Chinese-owned contractor (per Chinese law), and has higher localization costs and an effective monthly fee a fraction of NA/EU-WoW.

Out of the remaining 5m, a ton are:
-subs still being billed to people too damn stupid and lazy to read their credit card statements
-RAF
-second/third accounts
-botters
-Blizzard F&F, media, bloggers and other hangers-on
-Latin Americans (same as with C-WoW)

Sure, it's revenue either way, but there's really nothing there but the sheer cash flow. The cultural/intellectual capital represented is far lower than the sub count would indicate.

Activision works hard to conceal the reality that WoW's hegemony isn't just under threat, it's already gone.

Why do people complain about Day one DLC. The development team has a month or more before game launch but after they've finished the game. They don't sit on their ass and do nothing. Most of the time anyway. Borderlands 2 has finished development and guess what, they're working on DLC now.

Disc locked content is completely different though.
