I can now recommend Atlantic Grill across from Lincoln Center. Great crab cakes and steak.

I don't understand why people buy steak at restaurants. I even decided to humor the ladyfriend for our 2-month and took her to this steakhouse she really wanted to go to. I ended up paying for a meal that I could've made way better at home for 3/4ths of the price.

Its not like cooking steak is hard, especially if you have a good grill.

if you go to a high end steak house, then sure its worth it.

99% of the time, just grill at home.

Not everyone owns a grill, or lives in an area where grills are allowed/found in common areas. Some people like to have others cook for them because they suck at cooking, don't enjoy cooking, or don't know how to cook. You could easily say the same about almost anything why do people buy xxx at a restaurant when they could make it at home for 1/4th the price. It is certainly enjoyable for me to not have to worry/work on a specific meal and be able to focus more on other things for the evening.

A really good steak at a really good steakhouse just can't be beat. We're not talking about Outback here...I'm talking about:

Don't be a faggot.

Food is always more expensive in restaurants. A good faux-filet or filet mignon in a restaurant with bearnaise might not be "worth it" but it's fucking delicious. And bearnaise is really easy to fuck up.

Before I became a vegetarian, a good fifteen years ago, my family used to occasionally go to a nice steakhouse in rural Rancho Cordova, a good 25 miles from where we lived. This was near the Roris (rose-iris) farmstead I really enjoyed visiting. Sadly, that entire area has been devoured by urban sprawl. This makes me very sad.

Anyway, the steak wasn't so much better than what could be prepared at home, using a grill mod for our electric stove. But the place was this small, cute hostel out in the middle of nowhere. The mashed potatoes etc were different from what we were used to, and it was nice traveling all the way out there.

Today, having lived in Boston and San Francisco for the last decade, I actually eat out more than I used to. I experimented with making pad kae mao and other Asian dishes, but due to economy of scale, limitations of shelf life and cost of consumables etc it is actually economically competitive if not cheaper to just order from a cheap Asian restaurant for seven bucks. Campbells soup is two bucks a can these days, so really the only food options that beat cheap Asian food economically are McDonalds, Ramen, and what I usually eat, which is pasta, cereal, peas, carrots, fresh bread, and a stew consisting of rice vermicelli with vegetables and Asian vegetable boullion. The other day, I purchased more noodles, intending to experiment with making pad kae mao again.

EDIT: I accepted the deferment from grad school here in the States, with student loan attached. If I can't find a job in private industry or private practice (the latter makes my dick hard, if I can actually make that work, maybe prey on lazy yuppies who are too damn stupid to do their own taxes) as an accountant then I intend to pay back the loan by volunteering to serve my country.

I should be moving in January, if all goes well. I hope to be going out to eat with a friend of mine in the area who enjoys eating. I also intend to there implement Mazel's suggestion...

Cooking a steak isn't rocket science and I am a massive faggot about my steak (mainly because I've had so many bad ones), so ignore me. That being said, I make really good fucking steak because I get my grill hot enough, flip it once, give it a quarter turn, and let it hang out for 10 minutes after its off the heat (I prefer to dig into mine right off the grill though, just personal preference).

I also don't like sauces on my steak and I think you're murdering that filet with that bearnaise.

Come at me, bro.

EDIT: I also only like steak once in a blue moon, I'm mostly a fish guy. That includes Tuhl's mother's fish, as well.
