The other week I took a hang gliding lesson and thought, "Hey, this is pretty sick! I should stick with it." Unfortunately, to get the certification of Hang II, I'd have to spend close to $2000... and then I'd want to buy a glider for $2000-5000, and I'd need a place to store it, a means of transporting it, and then try to find a place to hang glide from in Northern Virginia. Just doesn't seem like a good fit for my current location.

So, I've thought about Kayaking. My house sits on a four-acre pond, so I have a training area in my back yard, and if I didn't want to paddle there, I could go to the number of lakes, rivers and creeks in the area. A kayak is way cheaper than a hang glider, I could easily stow it in the garage, transport it using either car, and take a fishing pole along for the ride to do some fishing. Just seems like a great fit for my life.

There is a place called Potomac Paddlesports and they have a Flatwater Package for $395. You can click the link to see the details, but it comes out to five trips, 18 hours of instruction/supervision, equipment use and all that fun stuff. They also have a white water package for $600 which teaches you how to ride rapids, culminating with a trip through this place.

Are any of you guys in Virginia, Maryland or within driving distance interested in signing up for some flat water lessons? I'm not sure when I'll be committing, but I'm trying to find some people to go with so I'm not trolling around by myself. Let me know if you have an interest and I'll let you know when I sign up.

For those who have kayaked... is it difficult to learn? How physically demanding is it? Did you enjoy it?

That's nuts. I've literally been thinking about getting into whitewater kayaking. I live about 20 min N of the Potomac. I've been rafting about 8-10 times on varying levels of expertise. My dad and I were possibly looking into rafting Gauley during dam release next year.

Ill look into this further and mull it over. Ill be in touch.

I love kayaking!! I would totally be down if i lived closer. But it is a ton of fun and you can pretty much kayak anywhere there's water, so its convenient. It isnt too hard but it is a lot of repetitive motion that you arent used to, so you will prolly be fairly sore. And for the love of god bring sunblock!

Kayaking is a lot of fun. I am in a similar position except that I took an intro scuba diving course while on a cruise this past week and now I am hooked and want to learn to scuba. Unfortunately I'm not sure scuba diving in New Jersey during the coming months would be as much fun as scuba diving in the Caribbean. When are you looking to take these courses for kayaking? It's been getting cold recently so just worth considering. If I still lived in Nova I would probably join up if it was during a warmer time :(

The flat water tours are starting back up in April, so that's the soonest I'll be going. The tours are priced at $95/ea (outside the five-pack discounted price) and each tour has a kayaking lesson at the start, along with the safety crap. If you ever come back down in the area, let me know when and maybe you can sign on to an individual trip down the calm Potomac.

Ahh that sounds a lot more reasonable. I've kayaked in some class 2 rapid in Colorado before and it was a blast. I don't know when I'd be able to get back to NoVA for more than a short visit but I'll keep it in mind.

Goddamn I haven't kayaked in years. Probably over a decade at this point. It's crazy fun.

I am 4 hours away, however.

All the tours sound fun, too. The moonlight tour would be amazing I bet.

I did ocean/flat water kayaking quite often during highschool / early adulthood. It's cake if you have decent arm / upper body strength. I'm in better shape now, so..yeah.

I'd totally be up for whitewater lessons, might be able to find at least one friend too. I have a ton on my plate right now, but I'd imagine I'll hopefully be in better shape (financially, physically, workload-wise) around April.
