So apparently there was some drama on Reddit this week where some guy who founded and/or mods a bunch of 'troll' subreddits had his identity exposed by some guy named Adrien Chen from the website Gawker. Once the guy's identity was exposed, he lost his job, which he not only needed to support himself, but also his disabled wife and his children.
Now, these weren't exactly laudable high-brow subreddits, there was stuff like /r/creepershots, where guys (and maybe gals, I don't know) would take pictures of hotties out in public, with a focus on the sort of girls who walked around with their thongs visible through their really thin yoga pants. There was another that this guy was involved with a while back called /r/jailbait, which was basically the same thing only with underaged girls. So we're not talking about a decent and lovable human being here.
However...
There are some things that I dearly loathe, and Gawker, Mr. Chen, and the sort of like-minded idiots they represent embody more than a few of those things.
At least one of the subreddits this asshat had founded and/or was modding was 'attacked' by another subreddit, the equally infamous /r/srs (srs=Shit Reddit Says). Despite the members of this subreddit being "offended" by the content in one or more of these subreddits, one of their members (maybe more) admitted to looking up even more offensive pictures than the ones being posted in the sub just so they could post them in the "offensive" sub in a deluge that the mods of the "offensive" subreddit would be incapable of keeping up. Why? So they could go back on their main account and report the very pictures they had posted in order to get the "offensive" subreddit shut down.
Doxxing, or releasing the personal information of anonymous posters on the Internet, often including real name, known aliases, address, phone number, SSN, credit card number, etc, followed. Despite Adrien Chen having written a scathing pieces decrying doxxing as unacceptable during 4Chan's /b/ Jessi Slaughter drama, which you will probably all remember as the source of the once-infamous "you done goofed, the consequences will never be the same" meme. In it Mr. Chen explained all the terrible things young Ms. Slaughter had to deal with as a result of her public identity being revealed, then castigated Tumbler as a community for their participation in the sharing of the girl's personal information. Oddly, despite his knowing how dangerous and damaging this release of public information could be to the person being exposed, Mr. Chen and his associates at Gawker decided to expose one Michael Brutsch, aka Violentacrez, for having the temerity to be associated with subreddits that posted pictures taken of unsuspecting women. Not pictures taken through hidden cameras or through their apartment windows with telephoto lenses, but pictures of these women out in broad daylight, wearing the clothes they themselves had chosen to put on and wear in full view of the general public.
Gawker, for those that don't know, also posted links to the leaked nudes of Vanessa Hudgens (one of the High School Musical kids), so it's not like they have an issue with privacy or showing revealing and embarrassing pictures of women (so long as it's putting money in their coffers, I guess). They had so little problem with privacy and Ms. Hudgen's public embarrassment, in fact, that despite a request from Ms. Hudgens and an attempt to have the pics removed via a DMCA notice, Gawker only took them down after it was revealed the photos were taken before Ms. Hudgen's 18th birthday.
The double-standard isn't surprising when you consider Gawker's own take on limits of an expectation of privacy when they're the ones taking pictures or "reporting" information about someone:
That's Gawker's editor, Emily Gould, who says that "there is a shifting definition of what is public and what is private space," and that "no one has the reasonable expectation of being able to walk down the street and not have what they're doing be noticed by someone." I guess what's bad for the goose isn't necessarily bad for the Gawker, amirite?
So to answer your question, Simone, I'm not defending Michael Brutsch, and even if I were, he's done nothing worse than the people who are trying to bully him and ruin his life do on a regular basis to turn a fucking profit. So let me turn that question around on you: Why are you supporting the sort of people, like the ones at Gawker and Jezebel, who make a piece of shit like this guy look like a fucking martyr by being even bigger pieces of shit?

Zaryi was high-fiving the dumb asses from Gawker/Jezebel for their "noble" actions in exposing this guy and ruining his life, and got a wee bit pissy when I rained on her parade by pointing out that 1) they knew it was wrong and dangerous to do it and 2) they do it themselves on the regular. Since I wasn't done beating the dead horse and didn't feel like anyone felt properly castigated, I drug the dead horse over to this side of the street where more people could see it.
In short, I'm as bad as you, which is why we love/hate each other so much and are totally gay for each other. Carry on.
So some people associated with a rival bunch of idiots, exposed the identity of this former bunch of idiots, on the pretext that they were somehow harming women by taking pictures of them dressing like strippers in public? And this was avenging the exposure of the identity of an 11-year-old girl by some other idiot on the internet?
And Zaryi is in favor of this because she thinks it's outrageous that women who dress like strippers in public should be caught on camera doing it?
Am I in the ballpark?

I was actually going to make a thread about this. FUBU is the best dysfunctional family in the world. We need our own sitcom.
EDIT: It seems the reddit has been banned. Phooey.
Anyone want to link any good candid shots they harvested before it was shut down?

One group of amateur idiots was targeted for various smear campaigns, one of which was having their public identities exposed by a group of professional idiots who were guilty of pretty much the same things as the amateur idiots at various points. What made the doxxing particularly obnoxious was that the guy that did it had previously gone on the warpath against people doing it on behalf of the 11-year-old girl to which you're referring.
And yes, Zaryi was applauding this because "WOMYN" and solidarity and all that bullshit, but at least a little because she put a little too much stock in what the asshats at Jezebel/Gawker were saying and didn't realize that were exactly the same kind of pigs, if not bigger pigs, than the guy she was so happy to see ruined.

Go to http://www.reddit.com/r/BanGawker for more information. Gawker and its subsidiaries are being systematically blocked on a lot of subreddits now because of this, and this is where the moderators of and/or participants in various subs are getting together to organize, provide information, and share their thoughts. If you're just looking for pics of girls, that shit is all over Reddit...along with (not surprisingly) /r/ladyboners (exploitation isn't wrong when you're ogling men, you know) if you're into that sort of thing.
On a related note, I had someone try and get a 4chan raid on my wow account once. If anyone knows Adessi, he can back me up that this actually did happen.
EDIT: I also have had my face been made into a motivational (EDIT2: It was actually one of those advice-dog things) to torment some kid I used to go to school with that hates my guts because he posted his name on 4chan.

I wouldn't call it the new 4chan. But Reddit has one of the worst website layouts ever and I have no idea how it managed to get popular.
