Water filtration is a scam and doesn't work.
Nothing you can buy cheaply, with no power source or consumables or chemical action, is going to be able to break down petroleum derivatives or chlorinated hydrocarbons or heavy metals or remove bacteria or fungal spores.
The change in taste you perceive is partly placebo effect and partly because the chemicals in question are much harder to taste at low temperatures. Do a blind taste test if you don't believe me.
Anyone want to science this one and get the inevitable "you're wrong because I said so" and the thing about the books going so we can get that over and done and get on with whatever it was we weren't talking about before our brother threw down the obligatory "inflammatory and wrong statement to argue about for several hours?"
