I hear Hoboken is still mostly under water....confirm/deny?

Confirm. Mixed with the sewers early on during the flooding, so it's under sludge as well as water.

Power's back above 26th street with some small spots of blackout. Manhattan is still dark below that, with the exception of buildings with generators or cogens (like mine). Estimates for power in NJ are the 4th for most zones, 9th for anyone heavier-hit. Several coastal areas are in terrible shape (Highlands, Sea Bright, AC is a disaster zone).

On the plus side, since most of the traffic lights are out, traffic moves faster than I've ever seen it go in New York.

My company works with a business based out of Hoboken. They've all been working from home all week, had to shut their servers down etc. Huge pain in the ass.

Did anyone make a big stink about how bad 2004's storms were when Florida got nailed? I have no idea because we were without power for 9 weeks. I'm just wondering, cause all these images look pretty tame compared with what I saw around here back then, but they seem to be generating a TON of news. Is it just because NJ and NY aren't used to getting hurricanes, so it's more dramatic?

Exactly. Not being really equipped to deal with it is part of the problem. The fact that it's such a rare event also makes it juicier from a news standpoint.

Also, and I'm not trying to be a dick, but NYC/The Northeast is just more important than Florida. NYC is one of the most important cities on Earth (being so large and a financial industry center), it's just a bigger deal when something like this happens and shuts everything down.

Short answer: yes.

The northeast is rich and doesn't deal with this regularly, so that's important news. Also NYC is the financial capital of the United States. Plus, Brykon doesn't appear to be coastal. People lost trees all over, but the issues were more floods than wind damage.

Longer answer:

We had 13 feet of water come in, the subways have 60-100 feet of water in them, and a few tunnels were deluged. The issue is that NYC has half your state's population crammed in a much smaller space. NYC's infrastructure isn't meant to stand this kind of thing, so it's a real test of the city.

And yes Kay, there was a big stink back then too. On the national news and world news on television, you too had the spotlight, just like all those people with the tornadoes in tornado alley, the earthquakes in land of shake rattle and roll, and unpronounceable volcanoes from the green lands of iceland. Lack of power would've prevented you from knowing that for your event.

So if WW3 breaks out and there's an air raid, you're totally screwed. Got it.

If they break the pumps, yes. Not that hiding in the subways is gonna cut it given today's bombs.

There is an advantage to Chicago being more towards the middle of the country....we're much less likely to get air raided.

Though if Canada ever betrays us, we're screwed.

Yeah, I just had no way to be sure, thanks. We had something like over $40 billion in damages. We picked up a friend afterrr Frances? or maybe Ivan - and had to use a boat to get to his neighborhood. Was like that for weeks. Not a lot of neighborhoods here have underground drainage.

The good part was that I was in high school so I got out of school for 9 weeks ^____^

Why would you hide in a subway

If any of you are thinking of donating please don't donate to the Red Cross. They rushed to the places with mansions first.

I donated to the Salvation Army instead and I hope the money will get to those that need it... but yea, if you guys can spare some money to a relief organization, I'm sure those affected would appreciate it. I hear they're cold and hungry and, as of next week, it's possible they'll be facing another Nor'easter.

Yeah! I mean, the bombs might not get you but you'd probably get run over by a train. 8)

The NFL donated 1 million to Sandy relief.

Must have been tough to give out 1 million, from a league with 9.5 billion in revenues.....

Red Cross is a fucking scam. They are in the business of shaking people down so they can cut checks for people richer than their donors.

Non-profits in general are scams. Not for nothing is spending any amount of time "employed" by a non-profit a career killer because anyone who does anything knows they sit around shaking people down for money, eating lunch and cutting themselves checks. Admins get paid six digits to wander in at 11AM and out at 3PM two days a week.

If you want to donate, donate time.
