It isn't really something at all. It's nothing. A million dollars is about the cost of setting up an aid center, without delivering any aid. Salaries, materials, gasoline, cost of power and water, and what's left?

Yes it does. Food and materials are never in short supply. It's all about distribution, trucking the food around, preparing it, etc, same with materials, plywood and insulation aren't that expensive, the tough part is organizing people and materials, providing temporary housing and taking care of emergency needs while making arrangements to rebuild.
Non-profits ALWAYS, without exception, have far more food and materials than they can distribute. And in all cases, they simply aren't interested in recruiting or hiring enough help to make good the difference because their actual motivations are as Azelma and I described.

and not everyone is an unemployed schlepper living off their parent's dime, so time is something we can't easily donate
Get real. You have all kinds of (quite expensive and time-consuming) leisure activities. You've made threads about your outrageous Xbox games collection and your boating/fishing/hangliding trips. You simply don't want to donate your free time, you've decided you want to spend it on your own indulgence.
That's not necessarily a problem, just don't BS about it.
