In what sense? I don't think they were that "interesting" lorewise, and their ships are just too wonky, imo.

Not so much lorewise (though their role in the Utwig's rise to power is pretty neat), but more as a culture. Extreme capitalists, slaves/slave trading, using crew as an energy source in battle.

Reading through the wiki (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Main_Page) gives me a whole new appreciation for the depth of the game. I played through it completely, on my own, twice (without looking up any information on it, mainly because back then the internet wasn't nearly as big... I had probably 10 full pages of notes of important star systems/coordinates). So many choices, so many ways to arrive at so many different solutions. It really is the greatest game ever made.

I've been playing Tomb Raider.

Last time I played it, I was in the 10-12 year old range.

Pretty neat actually getting past Peru. It's a pretty awesome game, to my surprise, minus the parts where stuff has poor mechanics. One spot, you move this block from a fishes mouth, and the water in the room rises. Blah blah blah, I get further, and I'm like - bet I put that block back, water goes down. Try that a couple times, and it just pushes me back. Fast forward to frustration and eventual tip from Meowth, I find out you have to put the block back, but have to do so going at it straight. There's no indication of this, remember, it's just a fish's mouth.

I decided to jump on the hand of a statue of Midas, thinking jokingly to myself, "Hope I don't turn to gold!". Then I turned to gold and died.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

I didn't play SC2 in the pre-Internet era. I have to say I did use the guides, but not to excess. Honestly, something that turned me off to console gaming was how they started designing the games so you have to buy the guide (or look everything up on the Internet).

I thought the Melnorme were more interesting than the Druuge - their culture and psychology was more fleshed out, and the backstory connecting them with the Milleu and how they wound up becoming itinerant traders was more clever than for most neutral trader NPCs in most games.

"...potentially ominous long-term plans..."

i sure can't wait for the reboot of tomb raider that won't have anything like that, because fuck letting the player do anything. you're going to go from point A to point B, press X to make something awesome happen for 15 seconds, and you're going to like it.

don't get me wrong, i'm glad it will actually handle better then old tomb raider games, which are notorious for being some of the worst controls ever, but i don't expect to see anything remotely clever or interesting as far as platforming. just typical 7th gen cinematic bullshit.

I just set up my ps2 and wii to play emulators. First I'm going to finally finish xenogears.

I decided to take the Crebane challenge, and am playing through SC2 again, without internet aid. I have an excellent long-term memory, of course, but the sheer depth and expanse of the game defies total recall. I am also deliberately ignoring and not acting on the things that I do remember, instead working them out from scratch (the only exception being making a point of buying three more Eluders in early game, before the Spathi go home).

It's still incredibly fun. Simple as that. These guys were better at what they do than the turkeys who make modern games.

It's also very humbling. I can't help but feel I've gotten lazy with modern games, and I've noticed I've picked up a tendency to twitch. It's hard relearning the level of tactile discipline oldschool games required. And maybe I'm getting old. I feel so bad about myself =(

I'm playing on an Xbox360 controller, which is less than ideal on many levels, and I don't have the knowledge to configure it quite right; amongst other things I can't get the buttons to operate in automatic fire mode. There's also some perceptible input delay. I am worried I am picking up bad habits such as overcompensation.

It's an interesting, stark contrast against modern games how SC2 pits you the player against completely superior opponents almost immediately: to rescue the ZFP you must go up not against "trash mobs" or flunkies or whatever but UQ Dreadnaughts and KA Marauders. This is admittedly somewhat annoying given the best ship against them in early game is the Eluder, so matches take forever; I've been trying to play it more aggressively both to speed things up and to relearn the necessary discipline. And I've been relying on escorts rather than using the flagship well into midgame, just for fun and practice.

Question, is there a "right" way to play the Cruiser? Or does it always suck? It seems decent against Probes, Pods, and Intruders, but any other opponent just wipes my Cruiser out before I can even get any momentum.

The next games in the series are also pretty good, haven't finished them either.

I never played Xenogears. Xenosaga is interesting (more so if you have enough points in culture to fully understand all the references) but a bit staid, linear and grindy. I didn't play past Episode I, from what I hear the rest was downhill.

And, uh, really long hallways. Really long.
