So the people have spoken, and they have voted for the very system that stopped anything happening for the last two years. It is a three-legged race with the runners struggling to go their own sweet way, while bound together by heavy chains.

There will be a lot of talk of the fiscal cliff - the mutually agreed suicide pact that was meant to concentrate minds on agreement.

Unless they do, the Democrats will be hit by spending cuts they don't want and the Republicans saddled with tax rises plus defence cuts that are abhorrent to them. Still chained on the edge, they seem determined to jump off the cliff, wrapped in an ugly embrace.

But the fiscal cliff is just one example of where the president may find it difficult to move forward. It's not easy to achieve reform of the tax code, spending on infrastructure, and progress on green energy.

And his partners may be locked in a struggle of their own. For Republicans, defeat may be followed by a healthy debate. Or it may be political civil war.

The implied assumptions in Mardell's column are interesting. Specifically, the assumptions that green energy is the only way forward, that taxes have to go up, and that the GOP can only meet with further failure if they continue with their ideological views.

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledged on Wednesday to change the rules of the Senate so that the minority party has fewer tools to obstruct legislative business.

In his first post-election press conference, the Nevada Democrat said he wouldn't go so far as to eliminate the filibuster, which requires 60 votes for the chamber to enter and exit the amendment and debate process. But in remarks meant to preview a more combative approach during the next session, he warned Republicans that obstructionism as a tactic won't be tolerated -- or as technically feasible

Do you really think the Dems are going to be able to get 60 votes to change the rules that require them to have 60 votes to change the rules?

Even if they did, special interests would still run DC. Or, more accurately, prevent it from running.

What worries me is that he doesn't seem to think that measure can be abused by the other side of the aisle the next time they come into serious power.

One cannot abuse that which is working as intended. The procedural system is not intended to be an insurmountable obstacle to legitimate governance of any persuasion.

And it is becoming increasingly apparent the US - probably the entire world - is headed into a long and deep swing to the left. The GOP may win some elections but they will not again have a broad mandate.

I had a dream Obama would win by +4 pts. I really am surprised at how few people turned out to vote this election. 12 million less people voted than in 2008, talk about being upset with lackluster candidates, they could have at least voted 3rd party to send an official message of no confidence.

Rome fell because it degenerated into a bunch of individuals looking out for themselves.

Not voting is the ultimate vote of no-confidence. Third parties are a joke.

Not voting is laziness.

Nop. Too lazy to vote if you're eligible? GTFO. No, seriously.

I came back from Antigua for two reasons: see the people I love, and to vote.

I didn't look into the whole process of registering for absentee, and I wanted to visit home anyway. I figured election time was as good a time as any, since I could knock out two birds with one stone.

Voting for Obama so you can get free everything for the rest of your life and plunge this great nation into socialism is laziness.

...or maybe neither statement is accurate. Maybe you're voting for Obama because you have faith in the man, and in the process.

Maybe I don't bother to vote because having faith in the candidates is impossible when you have no faith in the process as a whole.
