The markets are pure speculation and a poor indicator of economic reality, and their day-to-day gyrations are about as relevant as an Ouija board.

It has happened before that disreputable politicians have gotten power on the strength of established interests and then refused to play ball. Really you are defending a politician on the basis of being the worst sort of politician, a myopic and pig-headed fool, obsessed with having things his way, determined to go down with the ship rather than try to fix it.

Those kinds of politicians are the greatest threat to democracy there is. Because when they don't do their jobs, someone else winds up doing it for them.

I agree. He can singlehandedly destroy the Republican Party for a generation if he wants to dig in and refuse to compromise on everything. I think he already said that each dollar of tax increases had to be met by 3 or 5 dollars of spending cuts, so we already know where this is going.

I think the election stated pretty hard that being a party of obstructionists and lying your ass off about the opposition isn't popular.

Or it says that most voters believe that our government is better when it's jammed up than it is when it's "doing the business of the people," so they left the status quo in place.

Even if it wasn't a pattern, there are two other reasons for that (in certain sectors). The financiers relying on a Romney victory who were gambling on the chance of a Dodd-Frank repeal got fucked in the ass, and the approaching "financial cliff" which would be a problem no matter who was president because of the makeup of the Senate.

The status quo being all of the tea party people who were blatantly against compromise of any sort getting voted out of office in favor of progressives, right?

The republicans lost, in total, what...three seats? I don't see that being much of an indicator, especially when they maintained their advantage by taking five seats previously held by the other party. Given that most of the freshmen 'tea party' candidates who lost had a habit of saying unbelievably stupid things that I'm sure came back to haunt them during their election, I don't see how it's surprising some of them lost. I don't always check the box for a republican/libertarian just because they're a member of the club. I doubt other people do, either.

Sadly, I agree with Howard Dean. He's right that a lot of the stuff that's going to happen with the 'fiscal cliff' will never happen otherwise...and it's not just the "republicans will never let 'x' happen" stuff, there's also a lot of "democrats will never let 'y' happen" stuff tied to it, too. If it happens and the sky doesn't fall, it's going to make it that much harder for both sides to shield their sacred cows.

Jubber

Redux indeed. It's like this guy is bent on becoming the next Joseph McCarthy or Newt Gingrich.

I really wish the government would give me total control over the military budget.

I bet we would be just as safe and I'd get us out of national debt in 5 years.

Regardless of what you think of the republicans, you can't seriously believe President Obama is dealing in good faith on this matter, or he would have taken the Plan B offering and called a victory by getting the republicans to agree to any kind of tax hike at all. The problem here isn't that the republicans are unwilling to compromise. They've already made at least one offer to do the one thing they had said they would never do. The only party not compromising is President Obama, who not only insists on no spending cuts, but wants more stimulus and other spending.

President Obama can always come in after the fiscal cliff, offer to reduce some tax rates, and the republicans will agree (because, you know, tax cuts), and he'll come away looking like a hero because he still gets at least a middle class tax cut on his scorecard. The only upside with the fiscal cliff for republicans is that it comes with either a reduction in the rate of growth of government spending or an actual cut in spending.
