The republicans lost, in total, what...three seats? I don't see that being much of an indicator, especially when they maintained their advantage by taking five seats previously held by the other party. Given that most of the freshmen 'tea party' candidates who lost had a habit of saying unbelievably stupid things that I'm sure came back to haunt them during their election, I don't see how it's surprising some of them lost. I don't always check the box for a republican/libertarian just because they're a member of the club. I doubt other people do, either.
Sadly, I agree with Howard Dean. He's right that a lot of the stuff that's going to happen with the 'fiscal cliff' will never happen otherwise...and it's not just the "republicans will never let 'x' happen" stuff, there's also a lot of "democrats will never let 'y' happen" stuff tied to it, too. If it happens and the sky doesn't fall, it's going to make it that much harder for both sides to shield their sacred cows.
