It isn't. Many US presidents, from JFK to FDR to Jefferson to Ike, had affairs, without betraying the public interest. There's absolutely no correlation between infidelity and breach of public trust. You are objectively wrong in your contention that it is about more than sex.

Regardless, society does consider it a big enough issue that someone in a position of authority would go to incredible lengths to make sure it stayed a secret. If someone photographed him with a woman (or man, since lolrepublicans) and threatened to show his wife unless he did X, he might do it. It's stupid but the pressure and the issue comes just as much from within as it does from society.
