My one argument would be that if they are so much more advanced and intelligent, then they could also have developed a cultural empathy/progressive philosophy.
What I mean is...yes the white people fucked up the native americans back in the day...but it's pretty much universally accepted today that those guys were dicks and ignorant. I mean, think of all the people that rip on Christopher Columbus now, because we know he was an asshole.
Today, even with all the war and greed etc. going on, I think we're much more intelligent as a civilization in our respect for life etc. Look at all the conservation efforts we make etc.
My point is, I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that these Aliens, if they were like us, would just be hell-bent on colonizing and taking over. Perhaps they will have discovered sustainable ways to create energy. Perhaps they will have discovered how to flourish while preserving the natural order of things on their home planet.
