Quote:
Legal obligations aside, let us throw out a moral question: if you saw someone motionless in the street, critically injured following a hit and run accident, would you phone for police and render aid, or would you snap a pic of the dying victim and Tweet about it?

According to The Daily Record, the driver in question, 19-year-old Ikram Choudhury, came upon the scene at roughly 1:55 in the morning. Stopping his car, Choudhury snapped a picture of the victim on his smartphone, then tweeted, “Eeeehm wtf? Some guy just casually lying outside Ocean Terminal.”

Choudhury then returned to his car and drove home, never checking on the victim and never dialing 999, the U.K. equivalent of our 911. Police arrived on scene at 2:10 a.m. and immediately called for an ambulance, but the victim later succumbed to his injuries.

I'd like to say I'm shocked/surprised by this, but I'm not.

I wouldn't have tweeted about it, but I wouldn't have called 911 either. Too often if you call the cops when you come across a dead or disabled person, the first thing they do is accuse you of having done it.

Funny how everything this week seems to be about incentives. There are, as Aestu implies, more disincentives to stop and help, ranging from being injured by the person you're assuming is injured and may just be drunk/under the influence of drugs to being harassed by the police, than there are incentives to render even the most modest of aid. Unfortunately, we've also replaced the incentive to either help out or just ignore a situation with our 'celebrity' climate, where the incentive is to draw as much attention, positive or negative, to yourself as possible. This is why we now have people who are famous not because they've actually done something of note, but because they're the most obnoxious attention whores imaginable. There is no disincentive associated with unacceptable behavior...it's rewarded just as much, if not more, than acceptable behavior is.

People are generally good and decent. It's the effect of living in a society where moral/ethical judgments are frowned on as overly puritanical and unfashionable that makes them behave the way they do.

Wrong.

Lincoln said it best. "To judge a man's character, give him power." The reality is, most people are prone to abuse power. Alternatively, see how people behave when the boundaries of society are removed and people can do whatever they want.

The world sucks because people do.

I as an atheist have come to accept the necessity of traditional religion on a purely empirical basis. I don't believe the world can improve until people accept the ancient wisdom that dictates that man's lot is humility. To accept the limitations of his own wisdom and power. People can become good only if they accept that is not a natural condition, and necessarily requires subordination to some sort of higher calling - a moral system or social vision.

I believe that void can only be filled by religion.

Most states don't have good samaritan laws, so you can be an unconscionable cunt without the slightest repercussion.

I've called 911 for accidents before. I'd have called for it here. You're all objectively shitty people if you'd have done otherwise.

I've called 911 several times for car wrecks and shit.

Don't know why people would do otherwise

My friends and I were at an intersection late at night and witnessed a man getting hit and run over completely. We called the police and drove off in a panic. A man came out of the gas station on the corner of the intersection to check on the man in the street. We drove back to the scene after we were done freaking out and come to find out the driver was my brothers friend, and my brother was the passenger.

The boys were let go and sent home not even a half hour after the accident. No drug tests, nothing. The victim was a Hispanic man, he didn't make it.

The driver was on ecstasy. The cops didn't give a shit about the man enough to even test them for drinking.

This was a drunken rant but I felt like it.

Edit: I should clarify that it wasn't their fault, the man WAS drunk and crossing on a green light.

Honestly, it's been two years. I only care bout my brothers mental health.

It sure did fuck me up in college, I burst out in tears during a test and I eventually withdrew from my classes due to anxiety and depression.

The fucking chances of me watching someone get killed and my brother being involved somehow..Insane. And the timing of us being there.

Seeing my brother white as a ghost and pupils the size of the moon with folded arms outside a cop car was terrifying.

I'm over it now and I know people have seen worse shit but it did effect me, of course.

So when I was burying my dog, i heard a crash from the road behind the houses across the street from my house. Called the cops, found out later from my cop friends that a guy on a crotchrocket was drunk driving, drunk girlfriend on his back went straight through the pylon holding up an exit sign.

His helmet split in half but he was otherwise FINE. Girlfriend broke 40% of the bones in her body.

If that doesn't bother you, my first reactive thought when I heard the crash was "Thank FUCK someone is having a worse night than me."

It doesn't. Why should it? A drunk died from her own decision to do something incredibly stupid and irresponsible.

And she DESERVED to die horribly.

Why? Because they put others at risk. What if they hit some innocent person? What if some pedestrian was standing next to that sign? It happens all the time, a drunk driver kills some innocent person but gets away scot-free. Now THAT would make me sad and angry.

The fact the girl wasn't the driver is irrelevant. She was there, she knew what she was getting into, she encouraged this behavior, she was party to it. Designated driver? Apparently not. Who was at the handlebars is arbitrary.

Potential manslaughter got her just deserts. Thankfully no innocents were hurt.
Nothing to be bothered about at all.
