There are good cheeses produced in the US. They are priced comparably to French imports. Anything cheap is going to be awful.

A french guy is arrogant and elitist when it comes to cheese

Why am I not surprised?

I'd like to get a cheese plate from one of my favorite wine bars ( http://www.docwinebarchicago.com/lincolnpark/food.php ) and have a taste test with tuhl/aestu/others. If they vomit and gag I'll owe them dinner.

An American is stereotyping. Probably a fatty since this is about cheese as well.

Haha, stereotyping is faster.

In all seriousness, I know at the very least Wisconsin knows a thing or two about cheese. To dismiss all American produced cheese outright is simply absurd.

Which is why I didn't do that, see top of this page.

But every good domestic cheese is priced the way imports are, because they know they're good enough to compete.

Stop liking nice things, you fucking elitist snob bitch.

EDIT: Unless you're getting over a quarter pound of cheese per box that you check, you're still paying $12-20 dollars per pound of cheese, which is triple-pentuple anything of the generic cheeses at the supermarket deli counter.

I've found some good smoked cheddar at farmers markets in the past, but for the most part you're going to pay more for good cheese than you are for Velveeta. 1/4 lb. of the brie that I usually get is like $8 at the store across from work. If you have to get brand/store stuff, Boar's Head is pretty decent.

Aestu, you can get actual American Cheese that isn't processed cheese food, but most people don't realize there's a difference. I usually go to a deli or at least a supermarket's deli counter for all my sandwich cheeses, but even without that Kraft sells actual American cheese that is prepackaged. You just have to make sure it says "cheese" and not "cheese product."

$8 for a quarter-pound of brie means you're getting screwed, man.

I liked brie when I was 12. It's pretty hard to get past its reliance on fat for taste.

They have some other brands of brie that are $4-$5 for a 1/4 pound, but I don't like those as much.

I like american cheese on my burgers and my grilled cheeses because I am not a faget.

Blue cheese is the superior burger cheese. Munster, Swiss and cheddar are better for grilled.
