Quote:
Jim Greer, the former head of the Florida Republican Party, recently claimed that a law shortening the early voting period in the state was deliberately designed to suppress voting among groups that tend to support Democratic candidates, the Palm Beach Post reports.

“The Republican Party, the strategists, the consultants, they firmly believe that early voting is bad for Republican Party candidates,” Greer told the Post. “It’s done for one reason and one reason only...‘We’ve got to cut down on early voting because early voting is not good for us.’"

The HB 1355 law, which was passed by Florida's Republican legislature and signed by Gov. Rick Scott (R) in Nov. 2011, cut the number of early voting days from 14 to eight. It was publicly sold as an effort to reduce voter fraud and to save money, but Greer says that this was simply a "marketing ploy."

I don't see a good reason to cut down early voting, but I also don't see any reason it should take you over a week to get to a polling place.

Were it not for early voting, I wouldn't have been able to vote this year. Fuck cutting the days down.

I think what your article is missing is all the stuff about the shady shit Greer was/had been doing and how his (former) party bounced his ass to the curb...you know, anything that would call his credibility on the issue into question. Not surprising, since HuffPo is HuffPo.

You mean he got caught doing what they knew he was doing so now they're turning on him to save themselves (just like Soles).

Who cares what the reasons are? These people are actively trying to destroy democracy. If they were brown and half a world away we'd probably be sending troops.

There's a lot of voter fraud in the states. Which is why they'll never actually fix it so fraud doesn't happen.

Each party would lose too many votes if they got rid of voter fraud.

Think for five seconds and explain to me why what you just said (yet another uninformed one-liner from Mr Usd) is moronic.

I think there's fraud in both parties. Party A possibly doesn't know how much fraud Party B is participating in, and vice versa. Why would either party shoot themselves in the foot?

Best to stay safe and not draw attention to their wrongdoing when it can easily blowback on you and send your own people to jail.

My question to you is, if fraud is so obviously ONLY being perpetrated by one party, why hasn't the other party blown the doors off the affair?

Couple reasons. For starters, there's no monolithic "the party" which can magically assert that kind of power. Additionally, there have been efforts to pretty clearly show voter fraud is taking place. Lots of them. But there's this problem where elections are time-sensitive, so any thorough investigating will take too long. Sure, they can uncover evidence and maybe even score some convictions on a local level of minor officials who were simply ordered to commit wrongdoing, but there won't be much public support for expending resources on a lengthy discovery process in order to address a problem that became moot the instant the election had a winner.

What makes you believe this?

For the same reason that the former half of your post was nothing more than splitting the difference and assuming the facts that you are ignorant of agree with your views. If people are going to make up their minds based on propaganda and emotional factors, why bother with the facts they're not going to internalize anyway?

And that is why American politics have been coasting downhill ever since Reagan.

I always figured the majority of early voters were old white people that can't be bothered(or can't for physical reasons) to go stand in line for a few hours. Guess I was wrong.

They have excellent turnout for the reason that they can (still) drive, have a lot more faith in the political system than disenfranchised people, and have nothing else to do anyway.

I figured it'd be the working poor who have to make time to vote.
