If being asked my opinion on someone counts I have. Nothing of any importance at the pizza shack though.

I fired someone today then proceeded to fill out an appeal for his unemployment compensation request -_-

Hiring is fun when the candidates are decent but when you have to deal with the shitty ones it's quite ugh.

I thought it was kind of cool the first time. But really, it's just a pain in the ass...and ass Mazeltov said, you have to deal with a lot of terrible candidates.

Also, it sucks having to tell people they didn't get the job.

Firing people is much, much worse though.

I've been the manager for the UMD Radiology Assistant Program for almost 4 years now. Every semester we have about 250 desperate pre-meds applying for 3-4 spots. The job is really easy, but gives a lot of hands-on clinical experience that med schools expect you to have before you apply. A lot of them are willing to sacrifice the salary just to get the job (a PAID pre-med job? at $13/hr? Pre-med's wet dream).

Being the one that says yes or no is really tough. The people who apply all have the numbers and the grades. We cut it down to about 20 people to interview and then go from there. It's hard, but rewarding when the people you choose turn out to be great assets to the program. I consider myself a people-person, and pretty good at picking people. That said, it breaks my heart when I have to say no to someone who so desperately needs the experience. Do I hold their future in my hands? Likely no, but I sure as hell feel that way sometimes.

One of the absolute worst things about my 9 years at Best Buy was having to interview people when the managers got lazy. Looking through applications with comments like "I got fired because the manager did not like me" made my head hurt. I pretty much discovered that the cute chicks and guys willing to work any hours for little pay were the applicants that the managers wanted. Nearly all of my suggestions got turned down and we ended up with a staff of morons. Damn I am glad I quit that place for good, lol.

Fuggin Best Buy. They got me with that Geek Squad "pre-prepped computer" bullshit one time. Ever since I fell for that ripoff I've hated them.

Good thing Amazon is killing them.

The best employees I ever hired were the ones from the local work-release program when I was managing the Burger King. There's something to be said for someone who would rather be at work than any of the other alternatives available to them.

The high school kids I hired were generally pretty good. I only managed to make one bad hire. She started off really good, but then she got herself a boyfriend. It was all downhill after that. There were some obvious tells when screening for a bad employee, like terrible hand-writing and sub-par English, but I noticed that the kids that either came in on their own or had a parent sitting on the other end of the restaurant during the interview giving them the "don't embarrass me" glare were usually keepers. The ones that came alone wanted to be there, the others didn't want to deal with their parents.

I hated firing people, but if you followed the procedures you were supposed to follow and someone was still on the chopping block that was really their fault. I'm still kind of accustomed to what I had to deal with in the military, where you can't just brush off people who don't perform and you're expected to help them help themselves fulfill their potential. It leaves you with a feeling of "why couldn't I get through to them" when you have that mindset that everyone can or should be able to develop.

I had a friend who worked at Best Buy for 3 weeks until his schedule a week before black friday looked like this:

Thursday: 5pm-6am
Friday: 9am-6pm

He saw that and walked out, never to return.

I got my current phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) at a Best Buy. They tried to get me in for one of those fucking Geek Squad warranty things, which I almost picked up until I found out it was $15/mo forever. I just went with the best case on the market and went about my day.

When your competition is the internet, you can only stay profitable by ripping off morons and the uninformed.

Best Buy will go belly up within 5 years.

I think allowing executives to rape the business and ride out the decline over 5 years is the most likely option. The problem with trying any short sell is that the stock continues to fall. For shits and giggles I took a look at their 5 year trend...it's almost comical. You can't short something that never goes up significantly...maybe they'll try to boost confidence by making some exclusive deal with a tech company, or having a random Quarter that exceeds expectations, but I doubt it.

They already have shut down loads of stores (partly because they way over-expanded when things were booming and before online retailers figured out how to easily undercut them). People getting scammed and their passable online store will help them limp to the finish line. I think they see the writing on the wall.

In the end, watch Amazon buy them out for pennies on the dollar or something...shut down most of the stores and get rid of the properties, turning those they wish to keep into product storage warehouses. At least I won't have to be irritated by seeing the occasional Geek Squad van driving around anymore.
