Nihilism is a copout.

I gave my parents money to buy a new bedframe as well as some company t-shirts/sweat-shirts. I also got my mom a beach bag while I was in the Carribean.

My brother is in China till June so I'll probably just call him on skype maybe give him something virtual like League of Legends RP or something.

My sister ugh I hate looking for gifts for her. Who knows.

I got my boss' family tickets to Disney on Ice and I'll probably treat them all to a dinner somewhere as well. I think I'll split a gift for his brother and sister with him.

Each of my employees that has been working for at least 3 months I'll get a generic visa/amex type giftcard.

For myself: I want my parents to buy my car from me for my brother so I can use the money towards a downpayment on a new car either this summer or next.

Suicide is shitty. There's nothing good about it. Not a single thing.

It's a shitty thing to do to yourself, and it's a shitty thing to do to everyone you've ever known. Fuck suicides.

Note: I've never lost anyone to suicide. It's still shitty.

I don't see suicide as inherently wrong. If you're in a no-win scenario, it is the best option. It's masochistic and undignified to continue to play a rigged game rather than step away from the table. And anyone who thinks that there is no such thing as a no-win scenario doesn't deserve what they have.

Not to imply that Jushiro and I would, uh, make a suicide pact or something, but we are in the same boat that we have lives that don't seem to offer much, and don't see that changing. If what Jushiro linked is an accurate satire of his parents, I would understand that, I've met parents like that.

My cousins, who live on a massive McMansion on cheap land in Phoenix, whose father, my uncle, was a middle brother who like many turned into a sociopath and pulls down seven digits a year pretending to be a doctor running a chain. I remember my visits there. His kids have every piece of crap one could imagine. Their toys fill entire rooms. My eldest cousin's bar mitzvah cost a high seven-digit figure. My uncle (who is Conservative not Reform Jewish) motivations are pretty transparently the same as described in the article. It's obnoxious and tasteless.

That wasn't my parents - one thing they did right, was they took a tasteful attitude towards gifts, an approach reflected in my responses to Euphonic, or so I think. They never played the status game, at least not in the material sense. What my parents did was go to the opposite extreme, basically refuse to play the game of life and instead get carried along by the momentum their parents established, while refusing to pay it forward. As someone in the thread observed, "they hate me but can't admit it."

I've mentioned to some people that I had a psychotic episode in my early years of college, a component of which was a bizarre relationship with a Jewish girl. What I haven't mentioned to anyone is that really fascinated and infuriated me about her, was that she had many of my same gifts - but she had parents who were unequivocally supportive. I was jealous beyond jealousy and deeply unsettled.

I think a great deal about my future but am unsure where to begin. I feel that my parents wasted a great deal of my life by putting me on false starts for their own gratification, and with a full decade of time lost I must now start over from scratch. These days, 27 is too old to do that easily if at all.
