Because other DS-family or even GBA systems are cheaper and you haven't played out the library yet.

I have to admit though, I was contemplating purchasing a PSP for the remakes of Final Fantasy IV and Star Ocean 2. But a PSP is much cheaper, no?

Is there a particular game you're buying it for?

Aside from that I don't know what I'd actually play other than mario kart.

I would probably go for it without a second thought if the 3ds were backward compatible a bit further.

I assume you know that Blue/Silver aren't forward compatible - the continuity begins at Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. IMO Crystal/Emerald were the best in the series, and the iterations get progressively worse from there.

So maybe you should do what I did, or started to do, which was buy a GBA and work your way forward from Emerald? Emerald is better than the newer games, imo, the UI is more elegant, the action faster, it's more responsive and less gimmicky, and once you get through it, maybe you will be played out.

GBAs are cheaper, more reliable, and more user-friendly than the DS anyway. I have both, but I still prefer to play games on the GBA rather than the DS if possible.

This way, you spend less up front and finish with more, all the Pokemon and items exclusive to RSE/HGSS. You could also try out Golden Sun and Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis (amongst characters is the only gay angel known to me), very fun.

Oh, and I finally found something for you. It won't make it in time for New Years' unfortunately. Is that still your address?

Yea, I'm aware you can't trade up from the first two gens and they instead rebooted them (probably can't trade for that exact reason).

I would like to play through all of the games (excluding sister versions) and now that I realized black/white are actually for DS and "optimized for 3DS" maybe I'll just see if I can find a cheap DS.

Are you planning to get an R4 card? If so, they don't work on the 3DS models for the most part. The graphics on them are pretty awesome though

Supercard DSTWO is probably the best one to get at this point. It supports (barely) a SNES emulator as well.

Buy one and play all 3 golden sun games.

There are two gay angels in His Dark Materials, but that's another medium entirely.

A friend of mine plays pokémon on a 3DS during her commute every day, she's had no complaints so far. I have no personal experience in handheld.
