Okay so I've been wanting a nice tablet for some time now. The main things I'll be using them for is e-books, browsing, and streaming the net or watching stored shows/movies/etc. I've narrowed the choices to iPad Mini and Asus TF300T. In terms of price, they're both similar so that's not the issue. Where I was concerned with each one is as follows:

Asus

The ability to load movies/shows/etc onto the damned thing. How does it work for tablets? With the iPad, I'd imagine using iTunes which is a nice, convenient way to manage the files. Is there something similar for Android-based tablets? And once on there, are they all stored in one, neat place like they would be on a traditional computer? And can this thing get viruses? If so, is there antivirus? Should I avoid streaming sites? When I'm in Antigua, I don't readily have access to computer help..

iPad

No external storage, but I assume I would simply swap out stuff via iTunes yes? And there's no flash support, so no streaming shows if I wanted to. It's more portable, but it seems like it's performance doesn't measure up, what do you guys think?

I'm really bad at computers and technology compared to many of you, so I humbly request any assistance. And soon, if possible, as I would like to buy these before flying out on the 5th. Much appreciated!

Why would you ever buy a tablet other than to use it as larger animated map?

Spending 350$ on a tablet is a waste of money imo. Buy a netbook/small laptop instead.

For the same money you can get almost the same 10inch display(not a touch screen), a quality dual core CPU/APU, 4gbs of ram, a 250+gb HDD, OH and it comes with this thing called a keyboard. The trade off is that its twice as thick/heavy but ffs they are still tiny.
My brother got one almost 2 years ago for under 400$ that runs WoW well enough(on low) and we picked up like a 250$ one last year for my mother to stream netflix with. Just make sure the GPU/APU can handle what you want to do.

I have a TF101 (original TF) and I freaking LOVE it. Looooooooove it. My mother in law has an IPad and bought a TF this Christmas because she was jelly over mine.

With the TF you can add a dock and turn it into a netbook-like device, complete with USB ports and another SD card slot, plus 8 extra hours of battery.

The TF has cloud support and a variety of ways to store music. There are also amazing deals to be had. Check out Cowboom and snag one with a warranty. The TF700 is something I am lusting after. It is pretty sexy. But my tablet still kicks the crap out of most other tablets on the market, so I can't justify moving on to a new one.

I have the iPhone which when coupled with my desktop is plenty for my needs. I consider myself pretty constantly plugged in, if I were any more on the grid I'd go insane.

My brother has a Nexus7 that he seems to love a lot. I have a Nook color, which has less app-based utility (unless you unlock it) but works fine for my purposes, which are document storage, music, and wireless internet.

Story of my life man.

But boyfriend did get a scholarship and got himself a new iPad. He pretty much doesn't use any other electronics. He streams stuff all the time, and they have all sorts of things to make it more "useable", like keyboards, mouse, stands, all sorts of crap you'd never need. I'd say the best and only accessory we got was an Otter Box. Griffin makes a pretty good case too, but the Otter Box also functions as a stand. I don't know anything about the other tablet, sorry. But Jeff would tell you to get an iPad lol.

The AlphaSmart 3000 is still the biggest bang for bucks in electronics there is.

Zero system lag, never bugs out, never crashes, never runs out of power. If anyone is stupid enough to lose or steal it, a replacement costs less than a bag of rice. And when you're not using it, it can do double duty as a hammer or doorstop.

BUT you guys didn't answer my questions! I already have a laptop and I've been wanting a tablet for quite some time now (you may remember my last tablet thread a few months ago) so I'm definitely getting one before I leave. I just need to know which is better out of the two that I've narrowed down to. Also, a tablet is really good for storing textbooks in pdf form for reading; I was jelly of all the cool kids this past semester who were able to do this.

The Asus Transformer has a variety of music storing options. All music is generally stored in the "music" folder. You can download an app to help you organize music. Doubletwist is an app that mimics iTunes.

I have first hand experience with a Transformer. I also have first hand experience with an iPad (albeit not a Mini). I prefer the versatility of an Android device. The hardware in that specific model is superb and will allow you to do a variety of things. I watch movies on mine all the time. It lasts all day.

Any other TF questions?

Lappys can read PDF's >.>

But.. If it's a keeping up with the Jones's thing I would take the ASUS(I guess a tablet might boot up a little faster ).

I think if I were to buy one though I would probably go all in and get something with a little more power and Win8. Like Newegg has an openbox ASUS Vivo Tab RT TF600T for 420$(550$ new on sale) and the Intel based ME400C goes for like 500 new.

But then again if reading PDF's in class is your biggest concern it probably doesn't really matter what you get, you should be happy with it what ever you buy >.>

I think most of us are not volunteering strong opinions because we simply have never had the disposable income to consider tablets.
