You and I are a lot alike in that sense. I play the game because it's necessary but that doesn't mean I can't still thumb my nose at them deep down inside when their backs are turned.

Back in the 18th century, when the British began to expand their empire, they frequently found that they could convince primitive cultures to part with their resources in exchange for baubles - pieces of polished glass, or mass-produced shirts or knives. Things that were common and unimpressive to the British but novel to the primitive cultures.

That is how i see the dressing game. These are lesser cultures that have resources i want. That i want their resources and compliance does not mean i am interested in becoming a member of their culture.

That is the difference between react and i and azelma and rikki, i would say. Rikki and azelma seem interested in success within the cultures they seek to dress to impress. React and i basically see our relationship as smash-and-grab by other means. Perhaps that is simply a rationalization, a conceit or arbitrary self-serving distinction. I just get the feeling we are playing fundamentally different games.

My goal is to advance to make enough money to provide for myself and my kids, sock money in my 401k, buy a 6 pack on the weekend and have enough left over to do whatever. I don't want to rent my soul to some company by the hour. I'll never advance to management positions that require being on call 24/7. That's not success to me. Success to me is enjoying life.

Thats a valid and noble enough goal.

I am not interested in having a family or enjoying life. My life goal is to maximize my freedom/autonomy while gaining the means to impose my will on others. It is for that reason i am disdainful of borrowed power. Power is only as powerful as one's prerogative on its application.

Because of the realities of how life works, these two goals are fundamentally in conflict, and drive frequent conflict with others and profound unhappiness and discontent within my own life. It is a tradeoff i accept.

I notice a huge difference in how people treat me based on my attire.

I get a ton more respect wearing my work uniform... collard shirt and khaki pants. Tucked in of course, with a nice belt, accompanied by a fresh looking phone hip case or pouch. I could be talking or doing anything and people pay attention and listen more.

Wearing my street clothes, people just think I'm some punk kid. Ignore everything I comment on when I'm out and about.

Grow a beard.

People call me sir even when I'm wearing a t-shirt, and I have long hair. If you look like you know what you're doing and people think you're over 25, it'll be sir this and sir that.

Eww... Beards are gross. Besides, I'm required to be clean shaven.

I understand the required to be clean shaven when it comes to jobs like a fireman, where you have to wear an air mask.

I don't like it in an office setting or something else less rigorous. Can you imagine the uproar if they required women to shave their legs?

American women are more or less required to shave their armpits.

Euphonic, I've gotten that whole thing of being deliberately ignored by smug 40/50/60 somethings. I read it as merely insecure bullying. I personally just don't want to grow a beard because they take time and effort to maintain - shaving is just, well, easier.

I find the socialist-like way I dress is a crapshoot. I think a lot of people aren't quite sure how to place me and that makes them nervous.

It's funny you think shaving is just easier, I find it to be the opposite.

Being clean shaven requires upkeep every day, or at least every other day...if you want to be clean shaven, you have to keep up with it.

...where as with my beard, I shape it about once a week. I run a trimmer on it, shave my neck, and I'm good to go.

I shave every morning, M-F. Personally I think I look better clean shaven, and I also enjoy the ritual.

Quote:
Domestic Lararia were also used as a sacred, protective depository for commonplace symbols of family change and continuity. In his coming-of-age, a boy gave his personal amulet (bulla) to his Lares before he put on his manly toga (toga virilis).

Once his first beard had been ritually cut off, it was placed in their keeping.
