I have all of these games... I must play them sometime. Is there some order or method I should be using?

Why do you own an entire series of a game you've never played =P

This. I watch my BFFs 12 year old and I have a 6 year old that likes Pokemon. I have not played it, however. Is there an order? Tips for playing? Etc. I have time to kill in the parking lot.

Pokemon are forward-compatible but not backward-compatible. Pokemon from older generations can be sent forward, but not vice-versa. Therefore, as I said on page one, it is best to begin with the oldest games and work one's way forward. However, it is not necessary to do so; each of the games is individually playable and one can start with only the latest iteration of the game - Pokemon Black/White 2.

The benefit to playing all games is personal experience, extension of game content, and a very few odd exclusives to each generation. Very marginal really. For you it would probably be best to play only the last iteration.

All Pokemon games, of all generations, save the game on the game cart, and only have room for one save per cart. Therefore, you will need your own copy of whatever Pokemon games you choose to play.

Pokemon, like WoW, is extremely easy to learn but nearly impossible to master. I would say much, MUCH more so than WoW, actually - in both respects.

Playing tips...
1. Buy Pokeballs in quantities of exactly ten. Each time you buy exactly ten, you get a free Premium Ball, which looks snazzy. Use it to catch "keepers" for your active team. (The "buy ten, get one free" offer is only good on the basic PokeBall variety).

2. It is not necessary to use the most powerful/expensive PokeBall. You will save a lot of PokeYen if you stock all types of PokeBalls and use the different qualities of PokeBall as situationally appropriate.

3. Catch rate is NOT normalized; generally speaking, rarer or more exotic Pokemon are harder to catch. There is no inherent penalty for failing a catch other than loss of the ball, so it is better to spam cheap PokeBalls except against Pokemon that hit hard enough to be a threat to your team.

4. Dusk Balls are overpowered. They catch more reliably than Ultra Balls anytime it's not morning or day in IRL time. Net Balls and Timer Balls are also a must-buy. The other specialty balls are mostly useless gimmicks.

5. Never buy Potions or other consumables from the PokeStore. On the top floor of every shopping mall in every game, and throughout most urban areas in Black/White, there are vending machines which sell HP-restoring beverages that are a much better deal. And there are Herb Stores that sell cheaper organic alternatives to conventional allopathic Pokemon pharmaceuticals. The fact they "taste bad" is not a problem; in normal play your Pokemon will gain friendship faster than they lose it to the foul-tasting herbs (and Friendship doesn't matter that much anyway). For maximum savings, stock all three types of beverage (to minimize PokeYen-wasting overheal) and Herb revives, heal powder, and heal root.

6. Return is a powerful move when levelling (one of the relatively few uses for Friendship, but again, herbs aren't a problem), and you get it early in B&W, I believe. You get Surf late on, but it is also very powerful.

7. When levelling, male Pokemon are better than female Pokemon, because moves are patrilineal and species is matrilineal. You will probably not want to breed more specimens of the Pokemon you use for levelling, and if you wish to do so, you may simply use a Ditto to clone them; however, you may wish to pass on moves which are learned at high levels. It is therefore a big time-saver to level with male Pokemon. Male Pokemon also tend to hit harder than female pokemon (but have lower defense), and are therefore better tuned for levelling gameplay. Besides, most female Pokemon are feminists.

8. As in any console RPG, talk to everyone. Everyone.

9. Half-Water hybrids are usually powerful and well-balanced and excellent for both levelling and endgame.

10. Save early, save often. Pokemon has no auto-save feature.

Not yet.

So I am sitting in front of lugia soft resetting, I'm going to give up after about 10 minutes. Shiny lugia not worth it.

Gyrados is bad and using anything with a double weakness except actual Dragon types is bad.

Plus it learns terrible moves that are better off with another. Since chances are if you can obtain a Gyrados you can obtain a Dratini which is superior in every way.

Sure, but I'm talking about soul silver here (which is basically regular silver)

You have just beat the first gym, moving toward the slowpoke town. Crazy old man gives you a rod - catch koiking. Stick him in front and level his uselessness.

It pays off, gyarados is crazy op early on in the game. Later when you can replace it with a dratini sure I'll agree there's better options :3.

I absolutely hate the game corner in soul silver so that's not really an option to get a dratini >.>

This will depend on the generation. For example in soul silver they no longer define all elemental attacks as special there are moves labeled as either special or physical and that determines the damage type.

Ice fang is ice [obviously] but is also physical. It will deal ice damage based on regular attack.

Surf is water and special. It will use special attack.

My gyarados is only 40ish but it has bite, ice fang, aqua tail and I stuck surf on it out of impatience.
>>You're absolutely right about electric though - it has no physical options for that.

The first three are all physical abilities and work quite well. Dark/ice/water :3

Of course now that I am able to face the Elite four I can work on my ideal team of six. I generally steer away from legendaries but maybe I'll use lugia for the hilarity of it following me around. "Hey guys, it's just the legendary protector of the ocean -- nothing special to see here. He's just out for a stroll."

Following on from the change in the European versions of Pokémon Platinum's Veilstone Game Corner, international releases of HeartGold and SoulSilver instead contain Voltorb Flip games. The reason for the change comes from the implementation of more aggressive and stricter legislation in the European Union towards gambling.

GBA/DS systems have no regional coding; the JP/EU versions of the game can be played on any DS. I was thinking of getting a copy of the EU version of the earlier games for just that reason (I prefer Voltorb Flip =P)

Conversely, if you prefer the old slot machines, you could just get the Japanese version of HeartGold.

All the alpha males play Pokemon. Or do you think you're not man enough to take on the Elite Four?

My elite four team for SS was a l50 Lugia, l50 Typhlosion and a l45 Gyrados.

and Jushi, if you passed the dragon masters test, you can get a free dratini from him that knows a unique move.

Failing at Platinum with a full team of 45-52 pseudo-legendaries...maybe I should just cheese it...

Platinum does seem to be more difficult than the others in the series. Or maybe I'm just getting old. Or am just plain bad.
