I was one of those assholes that ran on shit like Leech Seed and Dream Eater. My Gengar was badass. I no longer has any Pokemon. I gave them all to my ex-g/f's niece. I will never forget knocking out her team and her scream of "CHARMANDER!!! NO!!!" It was so hilarious that she took it that seriously.

Kids are funny.

I ran into raiku and was depressed that my lead pokemon wasn't something with mean look, or insert other unable to escape effect.

I am now getting myself a gastly!

Now then... gastly, oddish, vulpix, dragonite, ryhorn, and what?

electric? water? dark? psy?

Maybe a poliwrath for water/fighting?

Mean Look won't work, as all three know Roar. Whittle them down over time (the damage doesn't heal when they run) and then use your one turn to throw a Fast Ball.

As for your team, the rock/ground combo + low SDEF of Rhyhorn makes him more of a liability than an asset. I would suggest dumping him and snagging a water (Poliwrath would be good, high HP and ATK) and a psychic like Abra (catch them on the route between Goldenrod and Ilex Forest).

Ah of course, I forgot to consider their main issue is making ME run.

So really I should just have hypnsosis/insert other sleep effect.

edit: also I noticed in soul silver my pokemon do not die from poison they only fall to 1 hp.

Is this also the case with the dogs? I could just poison them then try to catch them from 1 hp?

I'm sure I will understand it once I pick it up, but for now it is Aramaic to me.

No no, they won't take any poison damage outside of battle, and they WILL faint and be unobtainable should they reach 0 hp (in any fashion) during battle. Your best bet really is to wait until you have a high-level False Swiper, get them to exactly one HP, then put them to sleep on the next encounter.

Personally, I got them to 1 hp, paralyzed them, and then tossed Fast Balls at them every time I ran into them again. But there's plenty of guides online detailing strategies you could use.

PS - I really know too much about Pokemon... especially Soul Silver, I have over 400 hours logged into it so far. Keep your questions coming!

Help me decide on a team for the game and end game. I'm having trouble picking due to the new changes.

For sure I'm going to get Gengar and Nidoking.

I also for sure want a flying, fire, and water type.

What would you recommend?

--

On my current file I'd end up with Typlosion and Vaporeon.

I kind of want an Umbreon but leveling Eevee sounds like the suck.

For flying, your "good" options are somewhat limited. Pidgeot is a great addition to any team up to the elite four. It's speedy, and has a decent attack, but it's no Staraptor if you've played Diamond and Pearl. You'll find that it (and Nidoking) won't maintain their usefulness very long (kinda like Raticate, if you've ever used one).

Fire you have lined up pretty solidly - Typhlosion. It's pure fire, which limits weaknesses, and has strong stats all around (it's a starter, after all). If you decided to drop it, you could pick up a Houndoom, but that's after the elite four (route 8).

Water has a ton of choices, with Vaporeon being the best but procuring a Water Stone is a bit difficult. You have to get really lucky with a call back from any one of the trainers who offer numbers and give gifts (I think her name was Lass Dana? On the route west of Ecruteak..) If not, and if you're looking to keep a surfer, get a SATK based water, ie not Gyarados or Kingler.

Dark, especially pure dark, is a bit redundant if you are for sure keeping Gengar (as you should, it's fucking amazing). Also, you'd have to get your Eevee's happiness to max and level it up during the night hours. It's annoying, and Espeon is better of the two if you're going to put the effort in (best psychic until Mewtwo). If you're dead-set on Dark, wait for Houndoom and it will fill two quotas.

So your team would be: Gengar, Nidoking, Typhlosion, Vaporeon, Pidgeot, and Umbreon/Espeon. Pretty good.
