Anyway, I agree Aestu...the apathy that pot encourages is toxic. However, I've seen such apathy in alcohol use. The difference is, alcohol at least is a social lubricant...so in business/conversation/relationships it has a much more fostering role. I'll agree with that.


Still, I'm surprised you don't find you and Usdk agreeing on a point troubling.

Seriously though, what was retarded about what I said? Did I say alcohol wasn't toxic? Did I provide reasons for alcohol functioning as a social lubricant that weren't true, or did I merely just point out a function it has in society? I believe I was referring to "apathy" as toxic...so what exactly was "retarded"?

Alcohol is toxic and its more okay than weed is the point Mns is bringing home.

Aestu, are you in favor of banning alcohol consumption for the same reasons? It encourages apathy and it is much more detrimental to ones health than marijuana.

People can use alcohol responsibly without becoming entirely dysfunctional, or even close, so why should weed be any different?

Being an alcoholic is expensive and poses serious health risks. It also makes it much harder to function in daily life. If pot were legal, pot would be cheap and easy to grow (at least at first), and being a pothead would be possible with far fewer health risks and less impact on one's capability to do simple self-care tasks.

Most people stop drinking past a certain point not because they're tired of feeling good but because they don't want to feel bad.

Pot does not have the inherent self-limiting qualities that alcohol does. And that is why the apathy it conveys is that much more dangerous.

Azelma, I think what Mayo means is that you are adopting my absolute worst personal quality - my reflex for long-winded belligerence. I think he feels that what he said didn't call for that sort of response, and you made a characteristically Aestu mistake that you wouldn't normally make.

And no I don't mind when people agree with me on individual points. Quite the contrary, it's a sign of profound discussion when dissimilar views agree on something. It's to be expected that people with similar views will agree on things, but if people with utterly dissimilar views agree on something, there's probably something there. Either a bona fide truth, or a fallacy taken for granted.

That's extremely incorrect. For those who are genetically inclined, alcohol is more addictive than all other drugs combined. Even moreso than opioids. I worked addiction/pain management nursing for a while, and alcoholics were some of the most terrible, resistant, and circumnavigatory people I've ever seen. It's a nasty, depersonalizing, and pervasive affliction imo.

We're not talking about people at the extreme, we're talking about people in the center. The issue isn't how some "genetically inclined" people react to weed or alcohol, the issue is how legalizing one or the other changes society as a whole.
