Thought you'd love this, Jubber. I highlighted some of the best bits. Really the writer makes some good points (albeit via chest thumping rhetoric which often gets in the way). Fiscal conservativism isn't ALL BAD...I firmly believe that. Social Security is broken. The problem is...the conservative christian right won't let the social issues go (abortion, contraception, Jebus, homosexuals) and so they've turned off the Millenial generation. In turn, we'll keep voting for democrats (see Chicago for a look at what 100% democrat control gets you), and we'll pay for the baby boomers until they all finally die. Maybe then we can get our kids to start paying for us.

Quote:
You Millenials voted for Obama by a margin of 28 percent, which will make it a lot easier for me to accept the benefits you will be paying for. We warned you that liberalism was a scam designed to take the fruits of your labor and transfer it to us, the older, established generation.

Quote:
You didn’t listen to us. Maybe you’ll listen to pain.

I have been told that being hard on you Millennials will turn you against conservatism, that I should offer you a positive, hopeful message that avoids the touchy problem of your manifest stupidity.

No. There’s no sugar-coating it – your votes for Democrats have ensured that you are the first generation in American history that will fail to exceed what their parents attained. Embracing liberalism was a stupid thing to do, done for the stupidest of reasons, and I will now let you subsidize my affluent lifestyle without a shred of guilt.

But liberals, in contrast, are nice. Obama is cool. You chose petty fascism with a smile. Not a lot of thought went into it. Facts, evidence – these were mere distractions from the feelings-based validation that came from rejecting us wicked conservatives.

Quote:
What did you get? The chance to be forced to buy health insurance you don’t want at inflated rates so my rates can be lower. You get to pay more out of your monthly barista take – liberalism ensured that the tanked job market foreclosed a real career – so that I get to pay less out of my lawyer checks. Thanks, suckers.

Quote:
Enjoy your student loans, Millennials! We tried to tell you that it was a Democrat scam designed to subsidize liberal academia by allowing you to go into decades of crushing debt to pay for a bachelors in Ancient Guatemalan Gender Identity Issues.

Quote:
It breaks my heart to see the young lawyers I hire hobbled by six figures of debt. But hey, your desperation works fine for us established folks. I got 297 applications for a junior associate position. Let me say that again – 297. Most of them weren’t even practicing law – they were brewing coffee, not writing briefs. Now, I understand that most of you learned nothing but liberal clichés in college, but take a guess: As an employer, are the salaries I pay generally more or less when I have 297 people competing for each job?

So feel free to keep voting for the liberals who keep you in chains. I’ll take my cheaper insurance, my future Social Security checks, and the other benefits that come from being established without guilt. The guys who you squander your votes upon certainly won’t change that equation. You’ll tread water in life, but hey, at least those conservatives won’t be in charge!

Thanks again, suckers. Now get off my lawn.

I like how he admits to paying lower wages and then points to the government for why millenials are drowning in debt 3 sentences later.

Haha yeah I think there's a simple factor of supply and demand...just kinda how capitalism works.

And I think he calls out millenials drowning in debt because of their student loans for Northeastern Asian and Hispanic Gender Studies degrees. Though he fails to see the connection that lack of economic prosperity (and outsourcing and owners taking advantage of desperate applicants) leads to underemployed millenials drowning in debt.

If you invest that kind of money and time into some major like that, you deserve to drown in debt.

Only truly terrible people "deserve" to suffer. In my opinion anyway. I don't think people who make silly choices "deserve" suffering.

fuck those kids from being raised and reared for the first 18 years of their life that all they have to do is have a piece of paper saying they went to college to do anything they want in life and fuck them for not knowing about job trends 4 years down the road when they're 17-18 years old, I agree. I also agree with the generation before them destroying millions of jobs by shipping them overseas and automation, massively spiking the cost of tuition well above inflation, demand years of experience for entry level jobs since they can't be bothered to train people (thus creating unpaid internships), and then pissing on their children and demanding to know why they feel like they're entitled to livable wages. its not like they were raised from birth believing that all they needed was a diploma and they'd succeed in life or anything.

Oh I know college is a scam. It is still necessary for doctors and engineers and lawyers, but I still say if you major in Sanskrit or Art History or Womyn's studies, you're going to fucking starve, and you deserve it.

- Nobody deserves to starve, especially people in what's supposed to be the best country in the world.
- You're talking about fellow citizens starving and dying.
- This whole "useless major" thing is bullshit. Yeah, they happen, but there's a serious amount of people who actually picked decent majors who can't find a job whatsoever. Slashed government funding to research grants is murdering the STEM majors and lower taxes and the systematic fucking of unions is killing the education field, for example. Good fucking luck to anyone that doesn't have connections that's able to find a job in their field immediately out of college that will pay enough for them to both live comfortably and pay off their college debt.

Pretty much everyone I know is either still slaving over applications to get a job in the field that their degree matters, have given up entirely, are drowning in debt, or are working shit jobs with shit pay because they're the only ones that are hiring. Its alright, though. I'm fine with the whole "pissing on everyone worse off than you" mentality of the current crop of Republicans, because they're doing their damndest to make sure they make momentary gains with a rapidly aging (and dying) generation at the expense of destroying any hope in the most progressive, educated, and tech-savvy generation we've ever seen. Calling everything socialist that benefits anyone even marginally is great to scare those who grew up in the Cold War, but for everyone born after or can't remember it, its just making them think that they're socialists.

Reminder that the Republican "outreach" to young people about finally having affordable healthcare is trying to convince them to not get it, pay the fines that fund Obamacare anyways, and go bankrupt the second they need a serious medical procedure.

I never said the important majors leaving people crippled by debt was a good thing. I said the people who take bullshit majors and then bitch and moan because no one wants to hire Unicornologists are fucking stupid. Those same bullshit majors are taking up financial aid, scholorships, grants and loans(demand driving up the price) which should be going to people with legitimate majors.

Grats on projecting your issues with the republican party(most of which are legitimate issues) on me just because I don't believe in funding people chasing bullshit major pipe dreams though.

Underwater Basketweaving is a practical degree. If you live in an area where you 1) need to weave baskets and 2) are prone to flooding, then it absolutely make sense. Good luck trying to weave a basket underwater if you've never been taught, shit's tough.

When was the last time you ever voted for a democrat or agreed with anything remotely liberal? You don't get to joust at republican strawmen like welfare queens and useless majors, support republican talking points constantly, and then get mad when someone calls you a republican.

I don't think we should let people starve.

That said, I think it's the fault of:

1) Universities (admissions/guidance departments)
2) Parents
3) The kids themselves

All three have a responsibility to answer the question "what can I do with this degree?" "what is my plan after college?" -- and far too many have zero oversight.

I worked at a movie theatre in college...it would SHOCK you how many film studies majors were there making minimum wage with thousands upon thousands of student debt. What'd they think those classes about Citizen Kane would amount to? How many film critic, screen writer, etc. jobs did they think existed?

Or how about anthropology majors...or psych majors...so many of them fail to realize if you want to work in that field...you are PhD or bust. And if you're PhD or bust, realize that it's even hard to get an academic job.

People have legitimate issue if they are getting a practical degree and still can't get jobs. That's a problem. But I just can't shed tears for people with impractical degrees having trouble finding work beyond Subway.

Know why? I had a choice. I wanted to be a music major...I thought about it. Then my dad says to me "What will you do with a music degree? You get to either give lessons, be a music teacher in a school, or hope to make it big professionally" -- so I gave up on any kind of music dream...I got a job in business and now I run a company.

Yes, I'm fortunate for so many reasons (especially because I had parents who were smart enough to advise me against something so uncertain), but the fact remains...I sacrificed pipe dreams...so people who don't do that then expect me to pay for their random degree...well it's a little infuriating.

Gay marriage for one thing. Abortion rights. Gays in the military. Religious institutions should pay property taxes. Didn't agree with the people trying to prevent that mosque being built near ground zero. Didn't agree with the war in iraq, nor the way afganistan has gone.

It's cool though. Since I'm from the south I'm clearly anti everything liberal right?
