The squidgoat never talk about sex or alcohol. At all. They come off as zealous and self-righteous. They are very imaginative in rationalizing not getting their hands dirty. Unlike the humans, they are never wantonly cruel, although their self-righteousness is the common ground. They come off as a very patient, strong-willed and conservative people.

The squidgoat have a highly positive take on life - something that is most untrue of Russians.

It'd be my guess they are intended to be Slavic - at least in terms of their accents - but personally I see them as almost Byzantine. They are very orthodox and religiously observant. They dress simply but like to build things in a very elaborate, visually impressive way, rather than simply appealing to gigantism. They seem to have the Byzantine characteristic of taking a fisheye view of time, and talking about "our people", "Draenic wisdom", "patience of the squidgoat", the kind of epithets that Hellenes seem to prefer for themselves.

Personally I think gnomes are much more Jewish than goblins in most respects. Gnomes, like Jewish people, tend to believe that the only honorable way to make a life is by using one's brain. Like Jews and unlike goblins, they believe that the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake is part of a morally correct character. Also like Jewish people, they are high-strung, loquacious, and very resourceful.

The general stereotype of Jewish people is that of money-grubbers, but in reality, Jews are more driven by what they see as a form of honor in pursuing professional work. In this respect they are more like gnomes. They believe that the most important thing money can buy is security. The big parallel between Jews and Goblins is that both have names that reflect their trades.

I also think it's most amusing how the gnomes lost their home to the troggs and shacked up with the beer-drinking, history-obsessed ironworkers, who regard their guests as a mixed bag, just like...Whether this is an intended parallel or not is an open question.

A overlooked parallel between dwarves and Germans is how they both developed an intense fascination with ancient history as they began to industrialize, and this often manifested itself through foreign adventurism and dragging artifacts home. I think this is definitely an intended parallel.
