my '94 Celica does that, all it takes in my case is some enthusiastic shakes of the steering wheel. It sounds really simple, but it works for me.

Here in my car.
I feel safest of all.
I can lock all the doors.

It's because you're fat and turn the steering wheel while getting out of the car. It's a feature, not a defect. Put the key in, apply gentle pressure, shake the wheel.

If you insist on turning the steering wheel when the car is off and key out of the ignition, yes.

lol, no, i realized that was the problem, so i tested it. i vigorously shook the steering wheel, got the key to turn over, started the ignition, then turned the car off, removed the key from the ignition, did not touch the steering wheel, or column, touched NOTHING, then re-inserted the key, and the same exact problem happened. EXPLAIN THAT

Well, shaking the steering wheel worked. One point for Yuratuhl in car fixing.

My car does that a lot. I don't have to shake the steering wheel, I just have to turn it a little bit.

What is the Model and Style. I have a cadillac mechanic for my 97 Eldorado, I can ask him what he thinks for you.

I am seeing him tomorrow for my 200,000 mile tuneup.

Cool when I see him tomorrow I will see what he can tell me, Anything else weird about the steering, does it turn hard, it might be your gearbox is a little loose letting it shift just enough.

I wouldn't say I'm an expert, however, I am the white Lamont:

My dad owns a salvage yard, and I used to help him strip parts and do minor repair. Your #1 problem is that you're driving an American car from the 80s. There is no know fix for this that does not involve either getting rid of the car or traveling back in time to stop the unionization of the rust belt. Neither being practical options, My Favorite Frenchman is correct: Jiggle the wheel until the key will turn.

Wait until your electrical system decides to start going out, which is something GM cars from the 80s are notorious for doing. I had a Buick that the dashboard lights refused to work in because of the shoddy wiring, and had to mount a little battery operated light on the dash so I could see how fast I was going.

nah the steering is perfectly fine, it just locks every time you take the key out and refuses to unlock. pretty sure it has to do with the steering column being telescopic and tiltable
