I think you guys are blatantly missing the point.

just because he mentioned an incident including a forklift doesn't mean he's some drooling illiterate and all he does is "zoom zoom in da big masheen," or that it's his only job. In fact, he specifically said its not something he normally does.

I'm all for intelligent discussion, but you two are akin to Beavis and Butthead right now. "huh huh, he said forklift, huh huh huh."

Yeah, but I don't have that super-useful degree in "The Classics," so the best I can hope for is moving up to clamp-truck driver.

You weren't around for the start of the "signing posts" joke, and as such don't get it.

There's a big difference between being a megalomaniac and being able to discern that you got fucked, and probably got fucked because somebody had their lips wrapped around someone else's knob.

Because no matter how you cut it, it's not particularly "intelligent" work, or an art form with a high skill cap, or one that calls for a commitment to an individual employee on the part of the employer, or whatever. It's a relatively menial job with an enormous hiring pool and low wage floor.

Treating driving a forklift as some sort of art form with its own sort of arete invites ridicule.

I'm willing to wager Aestu has never held an actual "job" in his entire life.

Don't worry Jubber, just consider this your wake-up call. At least now you're sure you need to make some changes in your life. It'll be good for you! Plus after you find a new job you get to tell the other guys to fuck off.

Upon what basis?

For someone who took occasion to call me out for making what you called an assumption about someone else and things I wasn't party to, the shoe sure does leap fast to the other foot.

Yeah, and if a manager gets on a forklift cuz work is falling behind, does his brain all of a sudden leak out?

jobs aren't a well oiled machine, and often people have to step in to pick up others slack.

and if his driving a forklift is so beneath you, why won't you shut the fuck up?

We're getting really close to me swinging an axe.

So, have you?

Jubber made this thread to vent about the stupid crap that he has recently had to deal with at work. Stupid crap like that happens to people all the time in the real world. The world isn't a perfect place, people aren't doing everything they're supposed to all the time and the people doing the actual work (or lack of) aren't necessarily qualified to do it. That's how the real world actually works. When you're one of the people actually working and doing what you're supposed to, all the idiots not doing what the should be can be really irritating. Jubber was telling us his story, and you came in and started attacking his internet persona and post history. If you have such a problem with him get the fuck out of his threads.

You posted this in the wrong thread - but I'll answer it here straight up.

Point one: it's true I've not been a manager personally, but there's more than one path to management. Dumbass kids who go to the right colleges or major in business or have something going for them "manage" people older than them all the time.

Point two, I'll address in greater depth, because my experience here is interesting: My last job was working in the finance office of a small private school. I did a variety of things, including assisting with reconciliations and managing the AP files. I also helped with HR files.

I was told (and shown) that maintenance personnel tend to have HUGE HR files. This is because they tend to come from a certain type of background, and it takes a certain type of person to be willing to do that sort of work in the first place.

In particular, because they are not "professionals", i.e., their work revolves around physical work, rather than getting along with other people in a sterile indoor setting, they often have ridiculous interpersonal issues. I remember going through copious files about these people engaging in this kind of emo that wouldn't be tolerated from the "professionals" on campus, like getting ornery and arguing about dumb shit, or doing exactly what Jubber described, and stomping off campus and coming back at random times, or arguing amongst themselves in heated ways about buck-passing. Which was no doubt real, but whoever was right or wrong, it added up to more work for management.

During my tenure, they actually outsourced maintenance management, because the maintenance manager, a Mexican woman who spoke the language, couldn't handle it, and really it was a pretty insufferable job. They arranged to fire all the maintenance personnel then have them hired back by the contractor. The main goal was to just make all that nonsense someone else's problem.

I could say yes, but hey, it's the internet and I could make any sort of claim about my life and it's totally unverifiable. So why even ask?

I replied to this thread with what is my opinion based on my inference and experience, and I don't see what's so unjustified about that. My judgments about Jubber are in context with what he's stated elsewhere, about the entitlement of others.

But you didn't answer my question. What puts you in a position to question my work experience in the first place? Because I have an opinion that conflicts with yours?

Hey, I'm only mildly annoyed with Aestu because this is like his thing. He is the devil's advocate, and he makes...at least one decent point. Maybe I am only pissed off because I refuse to see that the other person could conceivably be as good or better than I am.

Except I'm not, because they aren't. Which is why I'm mad in the first place. To be told after my time with this company that I'm "less qualified" (their words) than some bimbo from "customer service" for a job in a field they have no experience in is a slap in the face. It's made a bigger slap by virtue of the fact that I have taken on extra responsibilities for no extra compensation, and the fact that I stayed on 2nd shift instead of moving to first shift and having regular hours just for the opportunity. All the extra effort I put in gets shot to hell because they not only give someone with none of my qualifications the job, they moved them from 1st to 2nd shift to do it.

The only "light at the end of the tunnel" I see here is that given how many other boneheaded decisions the asshats in charge keep making, I can be justified in thinking that they were wrong because they're wrong so often.

And because they're just plain wrong, don't wanna forget that.

Your Pal,
Jubber

Another thing I remember from doing AP was how obsessive they were about tracking overtime and making sure people took leave because they were petrified of anyone ever having grounds for a lawsuit. All that stuff gets audited regularly.

If you have this and that going for you, why can't you capitalize on it in some way? And now that you're gone, isn't it going to get done anyway?

TL;DR: People who didn't/aren't going to college like me are useless knuckle-dragging monkeys with no skills or self-control and they have nothing to offer.

I didn't say that at all. Actually most of my best bosses didn't ever graduate college. Many of them were highly intelligent individuals who carved out their niche in the world and had proud and autonomous lives.

I will tell you that community college is dirt cheap, with no obstacles to entry, and a great step up, no matter how much it gets shit on by universities that mass-print diplomas for dumbass kids with no life skills.

I will also tell you about a boss I had. He never graduated high school. He owned his own pawn shop, grossed a seven digit sum, and was, in fact, a highly intelligent and driven individual. I met one of his veteran employees, who introduced himself as a "conceptual genius".

"Yeah," the boss said. "That's why he lives in a trailer and works for me."
