For people who aren't "in it for the money," they have an odd habit of coming out of the job richer than they went into it. They also have an odd habit of giving themselves raises on a fairly consistent basis despite the alleged "not being in it for the money."

Politicians are paid such "lavish" amounts because it endorses the idea that joe shmoe can run for office, win and not have his family starve. however it neglects the millions needed for campaigning, butt licking and all of the shady dealing needed to secure enough support to actually win. A simple way to ensure that there is no political body that can vote themselves like 200m or something dumb a year is to just tie the salary to the inflation rate somehow, so it is a constant increase, following theoritically everyone elses wage increases over time, instead of jumps every few years that always scares people/accusation of them being greedy bastards.

What?

Do you realize that not only do politicians not pay a penny of their campaign and professional expenses out of pocket, doing so would probably be illegal?

The entire reason American politics is so corrupt is because all those campaign expenses...are paid by donors. Politicians fund their professional expenses on an office allowance, like corporate professionals.

The solution is to give politicians fixed campaign allowances and ban TV adverts and mandate a standard format for campaign promotions.

Before politicians were reasonably well-paid, they were even MORE corrupt.

Writing a biography that gets eaten up is a multi-million dollar cash cow. This alone will make any serious presidential candidate rich.

They aren't. It's highly illegal to take campaign funds for personal use. But they need those funds to buy adverts and events necessary to influence they need to get elected. Adverts sell for a premium because they work.

I'm sure the high-level government/corporate jobs most them get after they leave office are in no way a *wink-wink* quid pro quo. Also, they probably only take those high-dollar book deals because what they're going to say in those books are absolutely essential to the state of the republic...which is why they're charging for it.

The jobs - yes, that's a legitimate issue, there should be "cooling down" laws.

Books - yeah, they should totally write books pro bono. It's totally a sign of corruption that people are forced to buy those books. I'm being sarcastic.

Has nothing to do with corruption, it has to do with money. Their motives are not as pure as the driven snow, no one's is. They're as much in it for the money as they are anything else, and if they don't start out that way, they end up that way.

What's so bad about being in it for the money?

Then we should probably stop and think about that when they start talking about taxing all those filthy millionaires...because they're probably pointing fingers at people who really aren't all that wealthy.

Your Pal,

the median american income in 2004 was between $35k-$50k.♦

the lower limit of the top 5% was only $157k.

"taxing millionaires" generally refers to taxing people who make millions, not have millions. that's the top 1% or less.

just for a point of reference.

well, you can't quite have a specific thread for a topic, at least, not for long.

unless you plan on policing each time someone posts some news item and the thread devolves into some other argument.

now you're a blue. not quite what you imagined, is it? :)
