Still, that's a long, long way from an explosive amount.

I'm going to have to request that this thread be stickied just for that.

The next time some asshole says "I have a right to my opinion", say "Oh yeah? Well I have a right to my opinion, and it's my opinion that you have no right to your opinion!" Then shoot the fuck and walk away.

im just sayin'

it's impossible for an opinion to be wrong when it's subjective. i'm not saying some people's opinions aren't totally batshit retarded, but it's their subjective interpretation of a topic.

Not really. It's a temporary and partial solution; from what I understand, there was actually more than one leak, and this solution is not sustainable.

I like how BP's press release puts a ridiculous spin on it. "Milestone", "just the beginning", etc.

Most Americans are far too stupid to notice that there are very few pictures of the most dramatic damage of the disaster the way there was during the Valdez disaster. We don't see birds suffocating or miles of corrupted beaches or businesses shuttered or angry Southerners milling about. We see some "closed" signs and birds being cleaned off and the occasional slick - very inoffensive stuff. BP has learned greatly from the PR of the Valdez disaster and how shock images influenced the public.

I've seen plenty of pictures on MSNBC and other news outlets along the Gulf which has been showing the pictures of oil-slicked beaches, dead dolphins, oil-covered birds, dead fish, etc.

Are you suggesting BP has some magical control over our Media?

Oh, and LOL at Obama giving BP a $69,000,000 bill. In other news, BP raises the cost of gas unexpectedly.

Are you saying multinational corporations don't have influence?

$69M is pocket change.

I don't think they have as much influence as you think they have. There have been a lot of video and pictures of the oil spill. Hell, we have a 24/7 video feed of the thing pouring into the gulf. I think the difference between this and Exxon Valdez (in terms of animals and crap) is this happened 50mi off the LA coast, where Exxon Valdez happened about a mile from the shore, in a sound, with a lot of nooks and crannies. It took weeks for the impact to be seen against the shore but the Exxon Valdez didn't take nearly as long because of where it was at. Now, BP would have to contend with bloggers, independent journalists and more news organizations... and I really don't think they have the power to control what we see and hear. Obama wouldn't let that - he's clearly pissed off... slapping BP with such a huge bill and all.

The fact you actually believe this proves how successful they are.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Pe ... ncial_data

BP 2006 sales: $265 billion
BP 2006 profit: $44 billion

2005 Louisiana GDP: $168 billion
Lousiana GDP per capita: $30,952
Employed in seafood: 16,000 persons

2010 US government federal budget: $3.11 trillion

$69M is pocket change.

i don't see what it so difficult to grasp about this concept. how can a person's interpretation of a topic be wrong? it can be ill-informed, it can be fueled by hate, it can be contaminated by influence but it is SUBJECTIVE.

aestu's opinion was that antimatter cannot be used practically. even if i were drinking antiwater out of my anticup and heading to work in my car made of antidiamond using antiethanol for fuel, his OPINION cannot be wrong. his opinion could be that all those things were bullshit. his opinion could be that only spanish people should use antimatter, for god's sake. none of that is "wrong" per se. it's his SUBJECTIVE interpretation of the topic. an opinion is a deeply personal connection that a person has with a topic. if you facts supporting another opinion, then present them, and perhaps if the person is perceptive enough, they'll change their mind to a different opinion.

i don't understand how you can call something subjective then proclaim it cannot be wrong

to me most things which are subjective are probably wrong by default due to the fact its one person's interpretation, normally laden with flaws and bias

we're taught from a young age to distinguish between the objective and the subjective, yet here on the internet the subjective is put on a pedestal

i really don't get it at all
