Actually, it's probably not, since Kosher rules prohibit cooking meat and cheese together (melting cheese over meat counts in this regard). At least that's what my pal Tova told me. I'm no expert. We should probably ask Aestu or Zaryi.

or quad.

Its something like if you eat meat, you cannot have any milk products for atleast 4 hours i believe. its less, maybe 2 hours if you eat milk products. Eating them together is a definite no-no.

Also you're supposed to have different plates and different cutlery for meat and cheese. IE you cant use the same fork to eat a steak and eat macaroni and cheese. gotta be different sets of utensils.

It gets crazier from there, other foods basically banned outright are any scavanger type things, any animals with cloven hoofs (IE pig) shelfish and some others that escape my grasp atm.

I am proud to say that i ate a bacon cheeseburger during passover (a holiday when you're not supposed to eat bread, only matzah, another kosher rule). I think i counted 5 different ways it breaks kosher.

Religion banning foods is stupid.

Sure, its a good idea back when you couldn't really prep food well and maybe cut down on disease, but hindus starve to death and there's cows walkin around without a care in the world.

Yeah, the Hindu thing makes no sense to me, but if you read the Judaic Kosher laws and have even a passing knowledge about sanitation and food-borne illness, you'll easily note that most of the foods listed as taboo are those most likely to make you ill either because they harbor something particular or because preparation errors (undercooking, in most cases) makes them hazardous.

I don't get the meat and cheese thing, though.

One of the few things I remember from temple is that most of the laws of kosher were based on hygiene as opposed to spiritual meaning. They told us that the ban of cooking meat in dairy was because the dairy would mask the flavor of spoiled meat, giving you food poisoning.

Pigs live in filth and shellfish can become easily contaminated with all sorts of wretched diseases (not to mention shrimp and crawfish in particular can be a bitch to clean).

I'm pretty sure that there's nothing about kosher in the Bible but its rather in the Talmud, which is (iirc) more like commentary than actual religious texts.

Milk and cheese is more like anti-cruelty than anything. the line is iirc: "Thou shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk."

Its kind of like empathy, as in not using something from the mom that is used to sustain the life of the child in the process of killing it.

Talmud is commentary, just people interpreting and giving their 2 cents. Its like interpreting the law.

Or, Israel could keep their country and just beat the shit out of anyone who doesn't like it. Regardless how you feel, it is Israel; it is their country.

-They are kept afloat only by massive American aid
-Their economy will decline because of the enormous fiscal and opportunity costs of military spending
-Their economy will be at a competitive disadvantage because no one in their right mind would do business in a country under siege when they could just go to Europe, China, or India
-They will lose diplomatic ground and see other countries get what they want, whether it's trade access or military intervention or access to new technologies

They will continue to have to pay these costs forward into eternity and it is not sustainable.

Quote:
At least a quarter of a million Israelis have staged marches over the rising cost of living.

The largest protest was in Tel Aviv where police said at least 200,000 people were on the streets, while another 30,000 marched in Jerusalem.

The unaffordability of housing, childcare and even some basic foods has driven many Israelis to despair in a country with high prices but relatively low salaries.

"It's hard to live in this country," said 26-year-old student Ehud Rotem, who joined the Jerusalem protest.

He told AP news agency that Israelis perform their mandatory military service, work and pay high taxes but "still don't earn enough to finish the month".

They want to know how they have ended up in a situation where they have Swiss prices and Greek salaries.

I didn't go looking for this thread, honestly I was bored and nostalgic and reading through some old threads. I saw this and thought it was ironic with today's news.
