If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

i did landscaping for a summer in southern arizona. hot/strenuous yes, but moreover there was this particular type of cactus with millions of red needles. high in count, small and delicate enough to be carried by wind, they were great. the needles seemed sort of like the urticating hairs a tarantula will scrape off its bulbous ass and scatter to the wind in an attempt to blind or disable the unattended 5 year old trying to fuck with it, except these cactus needles went flying whenever they wanted to. never saw it coming, either.

you'd be in some rich asshole's retarded dr. seuss yard, clipping bullshit fanged plants that look designed by god to eat rabbits, feeling like money already isn't worth it anymore, and a refreshing breeze on your body leaves a sting that travels up your arm, to the shoulder and face. you take a break and take off one of your gloves and find patches of these tiny red needles absolutely everywhere like you're starting to grow a ginger fur armbeard. first instinct is to start picking each needle out but that would mean stopping, something that would be possible if you were working any other job.

hours later when you can finally go home, you're free to build a pile with all the shit you pluck out of yourself. working with your hands is awesome, and any tough job always gives you a great feeling at the end of the day, but arizona doesn't want to be tended to by anyone. never once cared about the snakes, heat or hornets or other direct threats, but those sneezy cactus things were bullshit.

Fast as easy, young child able do.
