I kill the time quite often by playing Road Rash 64.

Not an RPG, but awesome nonetheless.

Tales of Phantasia for SNES. Whoever translated it either left in all the good parts or changed it around to be pretty good lols. I don't remember character names but:

"So hey... What do you think of the girls?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well Mint(?) is nice and all, but I'll bet Arche(?) fucks like a Tiger."
"What!?"

Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast/Gamecube if you want to play an actually good jRPG.

Baldur's Gate (1 or 2) if you want the world's best RPG bar none.

If you've never played it Star Ocean, it is a pretty solid rpg and pretty lenghty, I'd reccomend it.

Emulation wise one game im surprised more people haven't played is Golden Sun 1&2 for the gba as well as Harvest Moon if you feel like being a farmer :P

I started playing it a few days ago after I found it in my closet. Baldur's Gate 2 that is. The only thing I don't like are the voices that constantly get played over and over and over again.

EDIT: Also, play Earthbound if you haven't. It's amazing + the music is so good.

Close to a standard RPG. Battles are done on a round by round basis, but for magic and specials, you use a shared resource pool that recharges a bit every turn. There are some ship battles, but those aren't super common.

Star Ocean 2 was awesome. Brilliant authorship over technology.

How about Persona 2? Or...dare we say...Rhapsody: Musical Adventure? ATLUS had a lot of good niche titles.

Aestu of Bleeding Hollow...

The combat got a bit dull at time, but everything else was fantastic.

Anything Bioware, esp Mass Effect 1 and 2
Huge fan of the Golden Sun series (getting a DS just for 3 whenever it comes out)
Greatly enjoyed FF12, Balthier + Fran were awesome
Final Fantasy Tactics (both the original and the DS version) is quite fun, though not sure if you can classify it as an RPG
