Rofl Henq, I actually went to eat at the place across the way (on the Boardwalk) from Paradise last Wednesday.

I was in that place (the one right on the corner) trying to get a drink last weekend when they id'd me. Left my id in the car. Apparently I look underage. I am freaking 28.

We ended up going up to the second floor on the patio for fancy drinks and some kinda of steak kabobs and cheese platter. Expensive but the best view on the whole shore on the weekends. It's called Watermark

I have no real interest in socialization for its own sake. I profoundly enjoy talking to interesting people and hearing what they have to say, but the overwhelming majority of people are just human filler. It's not a matter of comfort, I just see sitting at a watering hole as not enjoyable.

I don't get how someone so detached from society can look down their nose at everyone else and say they're human filler - maybe if you mingled with those you feel higher than you might see there's more to the majority of people...

You writing off people as "filler" for not being interesting and trying your patience when you subject people to filler in your posts for the sake of trying to be interesting at the cost of people's patience.

Gotcha.

What "more" would that be?

They watch the same TV shows.
They like the same mass-produced goods.
They subscribe to the same stereotyped social and political views.
They have the same stereotyped life goals.

I don't believe that everyone is the same - rather I believe most people aren't particularly unique or interesting, they are just some permutation of common qualities in people.

It's not even a question of material or philosophical issues, though. What it really is, is that most people are the unthinking products of their world. They are small and cowardly and do not understand how narrow their experience is or how their biases influence them, or even that they have them. This is why I love history - it opens the door to appreciating the breadth of humanity. The world of today is just an instant, and people who look at the world around them as everything are despicable.

This sounds very abtruse and megalomanical, but I see it all the time.

Don't get me wrong though...I profoundly enjoy people who are individuals and have interesting stories, experiences, personality - people who have richness and greatness of spirit. Unfortunately, there are the extreme minority, and it's only possible to meet them incidentally.

It's in response to the OP and if I didn't find at least a few people here worthwhile I wouldn't even be here.

Don't misunderstand, it's not that I "deign" to associate, it's a two way street. I'm in my present guild largely because I don't find acceptance easily.

And you're not going to seriously claim that most people who are on this forum consider themselves not above the level of most people, are you?

People are small, cowardly, unthinking products of their world!? What have you ever done to contribute to the advancement of society? Where is the mark you've made? How are you any better than the people who work day and night to change the world in any way they can? Those people could be fighting wars, discovering cures, helping in community centers, teaching students, farming food, cleaning streets or making the clothes on your back. Everyone has a story and I'm sure countless people have a story more interesting than your own - you'll never know their story since you're not a fan of socializing with people unless it's by chance or unless you read about it in a history book.

The putative "overwhelming majority" doesn't spend their lives fighting epic wars or curing cancer or vanquishing evil everywhere. All the examples you gave were professional and not personal, which is what this is about...people as people.

Clearly I shouldn't have opened my mouth. My bad.

So you're assuming all those are professional experiences? Anyways, a persons professional experience - something that makes up about 1/4 of a working adults week - doesn't help shape who they are and they can't craft a story from it? I remember you telling us how you worked at a pawn shop, you were friends with some jew-hating Nazi and that you spent some time in jail... yet, none of that is interesting and it's certainly not part of who you are (even though, if I remember correctly, you were telling us stories so we could understand why you are the way you are)...?

To stand apart from the crowd and look at everyone else as they're nothing because you read about people as people in some history book, rather than truly mingling and getting to know people... just doesn't... make much sense?
