I don't think they're trying to fix the forums. I think they're trying to break them. Think about it: If this ruins the forums, there's no point in keeping them running. If there's no point, they shut them down, and save who-knows-how-much-$$$$$$ by laying off the people the maintain the forums, by freeing up the server space, and w/e else goes into the forums that costs money will also be going away.

I think this is an intentional effort to destroy the forums, and probably is not the first, thank you recent modtardation, and that Blizz will tout this as an "effort" to fix the problem that failed and shut them down.

Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.

why create a rube goldberg device to flip a switch you already have your finger on?

if they want to shut down the forums, they need only turn off the servers and fire the staff.

Lots of reasons. Once an organization reaches a certain size, organizational leadership fractures to a certain degree with various branches of the leadership having different agendas based on varying personal/professional goals and different outlooks and what is good for their organization. Someone in the organization may have decided the forums detract from the overall health of the business, or just don't like them, but can't do away with them because this is not a view shared by the rest of the leadership, or by superior parties in the leadership. In order to circumvent opposition, the party in question employs methods to cause the forums to "fail" so that the opposition has little choice but to concede that the forums do indeed need to be closed.

I went to a "town hall" meeting with my company's CEO, and it was him, the appropriate directors for my section of the company...and roughly two Human Resources people for every one of them. Sure enough, the HR guys would try to shut down any discussion of their policies, which they were fiercely protective of despite some of them actually creating problems for both employees and the company. Fortunately, HR people, being sociology majors, are complete idiots so arguing around them was not difficult once all the idiots I was there with finally deferred to my superior oratory skills and let me run them into the wall face first. several weeks later, a lot of changes were made. They were minor, like what counted as an allowable absence, how many of certain types of absences you could have, and small changes to vacation policy...indicating that HR put up one hell of fight to keep the status quo, but the changes got made because they failed to end-run around opposition, and their position was exposed as being motivated by something other than what the rest of the leadership endorsed.

Best part was that the corporate HR director that was hanging off the CEO the whole time wouldn't shake my hand when I left. That was an admission of defeat that make me all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Your Pal,
Jubber

So there's a pretty substantial rumor that Blizz is changing their minds and will no longer display the real names of Blue Posters (probably because that one guy who was dumb enough to post his name got so roundly pwnt by the forum community).

http://www.wow.com/2010/07/07/rumor-bli ... /#comments

This just increases the insanity of it all. Blizzard acknowledges then, that there is a certain risk with having your real name out there on a forum. Yet, it's okay for players to be subjected to that risk...why? Because they want to post on the official forums?

Seriously, just wait until someone gets murdered, then Blizz will be like O-SHI

Big Brother does not care to hear your opinions. Big Brother will ban you for the good of the nation and our glorious leader (Activision)

What this is really all about is a massive gamble the company has chosen to commit themselves to via their deal with Facebook which, it seems, contractually binds them to the ID change even if they themselves would like to renege and associate players only with their account names.

It's like the business equivalent of Sherman's March. A fundamental law of warfare is to never cut yourself off from other friendly forces and the possibility of reinforcement or retreat while pursuing an offensive. A fundamental law of business is to never alienate your core market while trying to appeal to a broader audience.

There is really only one question that remains:
Will the gamble pay off, and Activision manage to acquire enough new players from the Facebook crowd to make up what they will lose from dissatisfaction with Real ID and other changes?

probably. as calx put it the other night when i was talking to him, the majority of people joining the game now and staying are people who see the mr.t commercials and think "OH MY GOD SO FUNNY XDDDDDDD GOTTA BE PART OF DIS INTERNET PHENOMENON" throw in all of the people who spend 5 hours on their desktop on facebook, then log off, only to log right back in on their phone when they go to watch TV or whatever, and the customer base is just going to get bigger.

i don't think i see the connection that will be successful. what, is wow supposed to be like farmville on steroids?

putting my name on the forums doesn't provide any of the benefits of facebook. and i don't see many people moving from facebook to massively involved computer games if they weren't inclined to do so already.

the only thing i can think of is that they're hoping existing blizzard customers will move the community onto facebook as well so there can be advertising dollars there. but i don't think that will work even if it didn't cause a mass exodus from blizzard forums, which i think it will.

this isn't peanut butter and chocolate we're dealing with. it's peanut butter and wiper fluid. they don't synergize and the only reason you might think they would is if you weren't quite sure what one of them was used for.

I thought I read the deal would let players join facebook groups and stuff related to their game. Like, we'd get the option to join the Bleeding Hollow group... maybe a group for your guild, etc. Apparently it comes with a nice interface to do so, too.
