Heh. I knew that was going to happen since Haiti has always been a shithole, even with all the billions they received prior to the earthquake. You can't give the poor a lot of money and expect them to make the right decisions to invest that money and improve their condition - they're not educated enough. I guess that's why I laughed at all the benefit concerts and the people texting to the Red Cross; hope it makes them feel good knowing their money would've been almost as useless if it were burned.

I bet if we took all of the money we sent to Haiti and shoved in the hole in the gulf we could stop the oil leak. Hell nothing else has worked and its probably a better use of the money.

All of the poeple who spoke up to this exact situation when the fund raisers started are now made to look like geniuses. Locally we had a terrible flood in Nashville Tn, about an hour and a half west of my house in Georgia. One of the local stations morning shows was leary of the whole fundraiser push that started and decided to go about it differently. They got a good price from a local water bottling company and raised money to buy the water directly and drive it to Nashville. I think the final total was 2 and a half trailers (thats 51 foot trailers btw) of bottled water. The water was a good idea because Nashville had two water treatment plants, one destroyed by the flood and the other seriously damaged. Providing someone clean water to drink and cook with went a hell of alot farther than sending 20 bucks to the fund raisers which would end up as about 2 dollars or less actually reaching the efforts.

This plays more and more into my distrust for charities that advertise like crazy. Who do you think pays for that advertising, you know its not free.

When I lived in Chesapeake Va I worked in a semi-bad part of town. There were always homeless drunk guys hanging out behind the 7-11 accross from my work. They would hit us up for money every time we walked accross the street to get a drink or snack. I would never give cash and if I had the time, effort, or money I may grab them a soda or hot dog from inside instead. Having one guy yell at me that he did not want the fucking hot dog after having begged me for change so he could get some food just proved that he was going to run inside and get a 40 with it, as I had seen him before. This was one of the funniest moments of my life having to explain to him that he asked for money for food and I instead brought him food. The look of complete confusion made me laugh for about two hours as I could see him sitting behind the store trying to figure out what had just happened.

If all the money that went into haiti after the earthquake had gone to it in the following years of the earthquake, the resulting damage would have been far less.

Shoving money into a shithole>shoving money into a burning shithole

Should've stayed French. Works out great for Martinique and Guadeloupe. Hell, they like it so much they voted against independence.

I don't know the history of Martinique and Guadeloupe, but wasn't Haiti just one gigantic plantation?

I gave it serious thought. I think it depends on what turn the thread takes, tbh.

Pretty much, sugar cane, then the slaves revolted, booted out the whites and took control. They resisted invasion by the british i think, couldve been the french, dont remember, and started up a pretty good democracy headed by this one kickass dude who was all really cool. After a while haiti started doing really well, and Napoleon said to the really cool dude "hey, i think you're awesome, you should come chill in france with me and we can talk about how were so awesome and both freed our people from oppression."

The really cool dude got to france (could have been the moment he got on the boat, dont remember) was kidnapped, taken away and never heard from again. Haiti then pretty much got butfucked by one thing or another and pretty much reverted to what it was before thwey kicked out the whites.

Thats the TLDR history of haiti, forget most of the details. qq

I don't necessarily want to defend imperialism here, but the guy you're talking about, Quadtard, was Toussaint l'Ouverture, who had named himself governor for life. His rule was certainly a step up from the status quo on plantation islands, but it wasn't a democracy. Also, he didn't disappear without a trace, he died of tuberculosis in a French prison. It's not much better, but we're not quite Argentina in the 1980s.

I stand corrected, never really read any of this, was just second hand/vague recolections.
