Yea, I know they're the same thing but the representation of != never showed up in any of my mathematical texts; only in programming. I guess I only deal with people who don't resort to lazy ASCII when writing things like formulation papers.

programming is mostly math.

Na I just do discrete math for fun

And that's not really true you can be a code monkey for life and not know shit about math, only if you want to get in to more advanced design patterns and algorithms and stuff math starts becoming more important.

more like, you can be a code monkey for life and not realize you are doing math because it is math with variables and sets rather than integers and such.

So because the processor is doing millions of calculations even though the programmer, in their high-level language, isn't writing a single mathematical calculation... they're still doing math?

I was going to make a level 1 alt named "Fiveyearsago" and all be like zomg look what i saw it's super funny and proceed to share things that were hip and cool and trendy and edgey back in '05.

if you combine two strings, it's math.

if you proceed through a for loop, it's math.

if you write a while loop, it's math.

if you compare two values, it's math.

if you write with a cookie cutter tool that allows you to create windows and add functionality with ease with your mouse, you're not "writing" anything.

so i'm curious, what kind of programming do you do, and why can't the government outsource it to monkeys?

It doesn't matter what mid-level or high-level language I write in: C#, C++, Java, JavaScript, VB.NET, VB6, etc. To the developer writing the language, things like string concatenation isn't math. It's concatenating strings. Sure, when the applications are compiled and actually read by the machine, it's all broken down to mathematical processes executed by the CPU... but the programmer isn't the one actually doing the calculations. Unless you're writing some mad low-level language, like an Assembly language, then you're not doing the calculations.

a calculus professor doesn't do math, he or she is just running through the processes of derivation and integration of variables.

Well, I guess me posting this post is math... and when I turn on the TV, that's math as well. Tomorrow when I drive into work I'll be doing math and as I sit at my desk and scribble on a sheet of paper, I'll be mathing it up. I figure somewhere along the line there is some math happening - physics of friction or data being sent to a database. Since I'm indirectly causing all these complex mathesisises to occur without actually doing any of the calculations to make these things occur, I guess I'm a pretty fucking good mathematician whose more than qualified to be a government contracted programmer. Who would've known?
