Obama got elected, so his seat had to be filled. In Illinois, it's filled by appointment by the governor until the next regular election. Blago's party, or at maybe Obama, told him who they wanted, with the expectation that he'd do what he was told. He decided if he had to do what he was told, he should get something out of it (according to what I've read, it wasn't money, it was an appointment to some cushy federal position, like ambassador). Someone somewhere decided he should just do what he was fucking told, and ran the train on him.
Now it looks like they bungled the prosecution, mainly because dumb governor wasn't as dumb as they thought, and discussed everything in hypothetical terms. Not allowing the defense to run portions of the tape was a bad move, too, since it gave the appearance that the government wanted portions of the recordings hidden.
Won't be surprised when he gets off. Will be less surprised when he surfaces somewhere with a TV show, regardless of whether he's convicted or not.
