I need help

Me and 2 people from school have decided that within the next couple months, we'd like to move in together. They're doing their own research into apartments and neighborhoods, and I need to, but I have no idea how...

And rather and suck it up and ask them, my pride has turned me to FUBU.

Halp D:

I have no idea what to look for. Like, at this point the most basic information would be a huge boon for me.

Craigslist.org

Pick the major city, and then it's surrounding area/suburb that you'd like. Then choose apts/housing at the top. You can put a minimum/maximum on the price, choose how many bedrooms/baths, and even if they allow pets and hit search.

I do this even when I'm not going anywhere, I look at rentals and houses for sale because I'm a nerd. Plus, I like looking at floor plans, and how much house I can get for X amount in any random place.

Happy searching.

www.apartmentfinder.com

idk what your credit score looks like but try and find a place that doesn't check it or use credit score to determine your eligibility.

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.

1) Make sure you and your friends have good credit. Most places will deny you quicker than hell if your credit is shit.

2) Find out what the three of you can afford for a monthly rent. Don't forget to factor in bills like internet, cable, water, electric, monthly pet fees, etc.

3) Pick a city the three of you could settle in. Look for something that has high-paying jobs with a low cot of living suburban area. A 30 minute commute with worth saving hundreds of dollars a month imo.

4) When you narrow on a City, use the cities website (which most have in some non-official way) and look for attractive and affordable real estate. (Craiglist and community forums are good, too!) If you're in a city you'll most likely end up with an apartment or something but the suburbs might have a home for you to rent for near the same price. More room, garages, etc. The only downside for renting a home is property maintenance.

5) When you find places you're interested in write the addresses down and start researching crime. If you can, also visit the area at night so you can see what crowd the darkness brings. A place might look good in the day time but at night things might change a bit. Also, call the non-emergency number of the local police department to find out about the crime in that area.

6) Make sure you find a place where you can all live comfortably. 10x10 bedrooms get small quick.

7) Be sure to read reviews on the apartments or neighborhoods if you can. Googling the complex will often get something for you to check out.

After you look at a place, either hang out until the person showing it to you scoots off or come back later, and ask the people in the complex what they think of the place.

Check the fucking water pressure. If it's shit, fuck no.

What kind of amenities are there? My g/f got 2BR Apt. for $750 a month in a college town that had a washer and dryer...and a pool for communal use.

How much cabinet space is there? If you're moving in with two other people, and you're planning on storing three people's worth of dishes and food, you will need a bit.

More importantly than anything dealing with find the place:
SET GROUND RULES AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE ADHERES TO THEM.

What's the easiest way to check your credit?

EDIT: Went and looked it up. I distinctly recall that when I was a child, credit scores were free; I think forcing people to pay for them amounts to extortion. I have 750 FICO 799 Vantage which is...how good?

850 is perfect credit I believe.

Your credit scores are Excellent. (750-850 is Excellent, I think.) Unfortunately, it doesn't mean much in terms of getting loans, credit and mortgages since the economy is so jacked up. I know people who were denied a 300K mortgage on a 400K home when they had excellent credit, 100K to put down, 200K/yr income and about 1M in investments/savings.

Not sure if credit scores are such a factor in renting anymore, actually. Six years ago when we were renting they were important... but maybe not anymore since they need people to fill vacant properties? /shrug

when you find an apartment building or whatnot in your price range, make sure to google for reviews.

try to filter out the stupid ones ("omg this place sucks my neighbor smelled like fish!") and the obvious sell jobs ("this is the best apartment building in the world and if you live here you will be wiping your ass with solid gold"). just be on the look out for stuff like "my neighbor got killed in gang crossfire" or "i think the apartment upstairs is actually a meth lab".

also, go look at it to see if you like the area.

You actually can get 1 free credit report anually (not through free credit report.com or any of those spammers)

http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/f ... dotcom.php

Quote:
The only way to get your free annual credit report is by going through the FTC-mandated website: AnnualCreditReport.com. The Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency, set up this website, where you can request a free credit report under U.S. federal law. This is due to a recent amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act requiring each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. Many other websites claim to offer "free" credit reports, but may charge you for another product if you accept a "free" report. Don't be fooled!

So, I just checked my credit report from TransUnion, Experian and Equifax... but I didn't find any numbers. I didn't see any numbers like Aestu had. Where do I find those?

From my understanding Credit Score is different than Credit Rating.

Credit Rating is what those 3 things can give you.

They are combined and given some arbitrary score which is kind of useless.

Honestly, credit score is terribly close to being something like gearscore.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty royally effed. My credit sucks. I have too much medical shit on there that are, in 100% truth, insurance screw-ups. I've never been uninsured, but I have a bill to an ER that when calling said ER, said they don't have my insurance on file. Because I guess when handing the registrar my insurance card and license, that means to fail at photocopies? and like 5 appointments at my primary's office that they just declined to send off or my insurance was like lolwat? no. still trying to figure that one out.
