Why the government hasn't simply started calling all legal "marriages" "civil unions" is beyond me.

Legal marriage is not separation of church and state.

Mormons are really mad about this.

Mormon lobbyist groups funded a significant campaign (advertising etc) to get the ban passed in the first place, playing off the conservative hispanic (catholic) votes.

Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, is a Mormon.

Yay! I was shocked that they initially banned it, and wasn't the margin really small too? Like somewhere barely not even 55% in favour of the ban?
